Case IH 2303 – Transmission Control Unit (TCU) or Chassis Control Module (CCM): Damper calibration - low error

Issue description

During the transmission calibration process, the value recorded for the flywheel torsion damper is below the acceptable threshold. This prevents the transmission from calibrating properly and can inhibit clutch operation.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness between the transmission controller and the damper/flywheel speed sensor for chafed wires, open circuits, or poor grounds (electrical cause)

  2. Remove and inspect the damper sensor (crankshaft/flywheel speed sensor) for physical damage, debris buildup, or incorrect installation depth (sensor cause)

  3. Check for mechanical driveline issues, such as broken torsion damper springs or severely worn damper fingers, which cause the sensor to read an out-of-spec distance (mechanical cause)

  4. Verify that the correct damper was installed and oriented properly if the tractor was recently serviced (installation error cause)

Repair steps

  1. Test the Sensor Circuit

    Use a multimeter to verify continuity and voltage on the damper sensor circuit. Repair any wiring faults found.

  2. Replace the Sensor

    If the wiring is intact but the sensor fails bench testing or shows physical damage, replace the damper sensor.

  3. Inspect the Torsion Damper

    If the sensor and wiring are good, the tractor must be split (engine separated from the transmission) to access the flywheel assembly.

  4. Replace the Damper

    Inspect the torsion damper disc. If the springs are collapsed/broken or the fingers are worn, unbolt the damper from the flywheel and install a new OEM torsion damper.

  5. Reassemble and Calibrate

    Reassemble the tractor. You must perform a transmission/damper calibration for the TCU to learn the new mechanical tolerances.

  6. Calibration Process

    Access the diagnostic 'H' menu. Navigate to the damper calibration menu. Follow the on-screen prompts to complete the calibration, then cycle the key off for 30 seconds to store the new values in the module.
