Case IH 2306 – Transmission Control Module: 19th gear clutch dump solenoid over voltage

Issue description

The controller has detected a voltage on the 19th gear clutch dump solenoid circuit that is higher than the expected or allowed operating limit. This is typically caused by a short to power in the wiring harness, a failed solenoid coil, or a fault within the controller itself.

Check the cause

  1. Visual Inspection: Check the 19th gear clutch dump solenoid connector (e.g., C289 or X-263), the wire harness connector, and the CCU connector. Ensure the connectors are not damaged, pins are seated correctly, and the fit is tight.

  2. Solenoid Resistance Test: Turn the key start to the OFF position, disconnect the 19th gear clutch dump solenoid connector, and measure the resistance between terminal 1 and terminal 2 on the solenoid. The resistance should be between 6 Ohms and 8 Ohms. If outside this range, the solenoid is internally shorted/faulty.

  3. Harness Voltage Check: If the solenoid tests okay, disconnect the secondary controller/CCU connector (e.g., C330 or X-095). Turn the key ON and check the harness side of the solenoid connector for voltage. If voltage is present, the wiring harness has a short to a positive voltage source (+Ve).

Repair steps

  1. Prepare tractor for solenoid replacement

    If the solenoid is faulty: Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, and turn the engine off.

  2. Locate transmission valve block

    Locate the transmission valve block (refer to your specific model's service manual for the exact location of the 19th gear dump solenoid).

  3. Clean solenoid area

    Clean the area around the solenoid to prevent dirt from entering the transmission hydraulic system.

  4. Disconnect electrical harness

    Disconnect the electrical harness from the 19th gear clutch dump solenoid.

  5. Remove retaining fastener

    Remove the retaining nut or bolt holding the solenoid coil to the valve stem.

  6. Remove old solenoid

    Slide the old solenoid off.

  7. Install new solenoid

    Slide the new OEM solenoid onto the valve stem and secure it with the retaining fastener (do not overtighten).

  8. Reconnect electrical harness

    Reconnect the electrical harness.

  9. Clear fault codes

    Clear the fault codes using the tractor's diagnostic menu or an electronic service tool.

  10. Test drive tractor

    Test drive the tractor and ensure it shifts into 19th gear without throwing the code.

  11. Trace wiring harness

    If the wiring harness is faulty: Trace the wire from the solenoid back to the Transmission Controller/CCU.

  12. Inspect wire loom

    Look for areas where the wire loom may have rubbed against the chassis, transmission housing, or other live wires.

  13. Repair or replace wiring

    Repair the shorted section of the wire using proper weather-sealed splice connectors, or replace the affected transmission harness section.
