Case IH 2307-07 - UCM – UCM: Front Pilot Head #3 Spool Valve Stuck
Issue description
Front Pilot Head #3 (the electric actuator/module that controls the #3 remote valve) reports that the spool valve is stuck and unable to reach its commanded position. The system typically locks up the affected remote valve to prevent damage. This is often caused by dirt, rust, or debris in the hydraulic oil, or a failure within the electric pilot head itself.
Applies to these machines
5 machines- MAGNUM AFS Connect
- Magnum series (290, 340)
- Steiger series (350, 400, 500, Quadtrac)
- Puma series
- Maxxum series
Check the cause
Check hydraulic oil and filters for contamination, as dirt and rust are primary causes of stuck spool valves.
Inspect the EHR control valve wire harness for damage, corrosion, or loose connections between the UCM and the #3 pilot head.
Determine if the issue is a mechanically stuck spool valve or a faulty electric pilot head (if the valve moves freely but the code persists, the pilot head is likely faulty).
Repair steps
Relieve Pressure
Ensure the tractor is turned off and all hydraulic pressure is relieved from the system.
Access the Valve
Locate the #3 EHR spool valve and disconnect the EHR control valve wire harness from the pilot head.
Remove and Inspect
Remove the pilot head to access the spool valve.
Clean the Spool Valve
If the spool valve is mechanically stuck, check the sleeve and spool valve's lap for dust, debris, or scratches. Use brake cleaner and a small brush (like a toothbrush) to thoroughly clean out the hole and the valve components.
Verify Movement
Ensure the spool valve moves freely. When the spool valve is moving freely, the spring and plug will be much more manageable to reinstall. If the valve contacting surface is heavily scratched or scored, the valve assembly may need replacement.
Replace the Pilot Head
If the spool valve was already moving freely but the system was throwing the fault, replace the faulty electric pilot head.
Reassemble
Reinstall the pilot head, reconnect the EHR wiring harness, and clear the fault codes from the UCM. Test the #3 remote for proper operation.
