Case IH 2308-02 - UCM – UCM: Vehicle controller loss of communication with front pilot head #3
Issue description
The vehicle's control module has lost CAN bus communication with the electro-hydraulic actuator (the "pilot head") that controls the #3 front remote valve. When this communication is lost, the UCM cannot command the valve to open or close, resulting in a loss of hydraulic function for that specific remote.
Applies to these machines
5 machines- MAGNUM AFS Connect
- Steiger
- Quadtrac
- Optum
- Puma
Check the cause
Inspect the wiring harness between the UCM and the #3 front pilot head for open circuits, short circuits to ground, or short circuits to voltage.
Verify the integrity of the CAN bus lines (specifically CAN bus 2, which typically supplies the pilot heads) at the valve connector.
Ensure the #3 pilot head is receiving proper operating voltage and has a clean ground connection.
Perform a component swap test by swapping the #3 pilot head with a known good pilot head (such as front remote #1 or #2). If the fault code changes to the new location, the pilot head is internally failed. If the 2308-02 code remains, the issue is in the wiring harness or the UCM.
Repair steps
Preparation
Turn off the tractor, relieve all hydraulic system pressure, and disconnect the battery.
Removal
Locate the #3 front remote valve. Disconnect the electrical connector from the pilot head.
Remove mounting hardware
Remove the mounting hardware (typically M5 x 20mm hex socket screws) securing the pilot head to the main remote valve body.
Remove faulty pilot head
Carefully remove the faulty pilot head assembly.
Installation
Install the new pilot head assembly onto the valve body. Ensure the alignment dowel pin is properly seated. Torque the mounting screws to OEM specifications.
Reconnect electrical connector
Reconnect the electrical connector and restore battery power.
Software Update
Connect the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST). It is highly recommended to download the latest pilot head software (version 1.4.0.0 or higher) into the new remote valve to ensure proper temperature compensation and communication.
Address Assignment
Using the EST, reassign the valve addresses so the UCM knows which in-cab lever/joystick controls the newly installed #3 valve.
Calibration
Perform the EHR valve calibration procedure using the EST or the specific calibration tool (e.g., 380001903) to tune the valve for proper flow and function.
Testing
Run the tractor, actuate the #3 front remote, and inspect for hydraulic leaks and proper operation.
