Case IH 2311 – ENG: Electronic Fuel Injection Control Valve open or closed Circuit

The Engine Control Module (ECM) has detected that the fuel pump actuator circuit resistance is either too high (indicating an open circuit or disconnected wire) or too low (indicating a short circuit). When this condition exists, the engine may exhibit misfires, run rough, or experience a severe reduction in power (derate).

   Inspect the wiring harness and connectors running between the Engine ECU and the Electronic Fuel Injection Control Valve (fuel pump actuator) for chafing, corrosion, melted insulation, or backed-out pins.

   Disconnect the harness from the ECU and the control valve, and measure the resistance of the wires to check for an open circuit (infinite resistance) or a short to ground/voltage.

   Measure the resistance across the pins of the Electronic Fuel Injection Control Valve itself to determine if the internal coil has failed (completely open or shorted to 0 ohms).

   Verify that the ECM is sending the correct reference voltage to the actuator when the key is in the ON position.

   Disconnect Power

   Turn off the machine and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical spikes.

   Access the Valve

   Locate the Electronic Fuel Injection Control Valve (fuel pump actuator), which is mounted directly on the high-pressure fuel injection pump.

   Harness Repair (If Applicable)

   If the diagnostic tests revealed a broken or shorted wire, splice and repair the damaged section of the wiring harness using OEM-approved heat-shrink connectors, or replace the harness section.

   Valve Replacement (If Applicable)

   If the wiring is intact but the valve failed the resistance test, thoroughly clean the area around the injection pump to prevent dirt from entering the fuel system. Unbolt and remove the faulty control valve.

   Install New Valve

   Lubricate the O-rings on the new control valve with clean diesel fuel or engine oil. Carefully insert it into the pump and torque the mounting bolts to the manufacturer's specification.

   Reassembly and Testing

   Reconnect the electrical harness. Reconnect the battery. Use a diagnostic scan tool to clear the active 2311 fault code. Start the engine and verify that the code does not return and that the engine operates at full power without misfiring.
