Case IH 2311 – Transmission Control Module (TCM) or Armrest Unit (ARU) / MultiControl Armrest controller: Upshift switch - voltage too high
Issue description
The controller is receiving a voltage signal from the upshift button circuit that exceeds the expected maximum threshold. This condition typically points to a short circuit to a power source in the wiring harness, or an internal failure/short within the switch itself.
Applies to these machines
5 machines- Puma/Mid Range Magnum
- Puma
- Magnum
- Maxxum
- Steiger
Check the cause
Enter the tractor's onboard diagnostic menu (H-Menu) and monitor the live status of the upshift switch. If the value is stuck high, the circuit is shorted.
Disconnect the upshift switch connector and inspect the wiring harness for chafing, pinched wires, or exposed copper that could be shorting to a higher voltage source.
Perform a switch continuity test using a multimeter to measure resistance between the common contact and the NO/NC contacts while pressing the button. Continuity to power pins when unpressed indicates internal failure.
Repair steps
Prepare machine
Park the machine on a level surface, turn off the ignition, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical damage.
Access switch
Remove the necessary trim panels on the Multi-Function Handle (MFH), shuttle lever, or right-hand armrest console to access the upshift switch and its sub-harness.
Disconnect switch
Disconnect the faulty switch's connector from the main machine harness.
Repair wiring
If the diagnostic tests revealed a short in the wiring harness, locate the damaged section of the wire and repair/splice it using OEM-approved sealed connectors.
Replace switch
If the switch itself failed the continuity test, remove its retaining hardware and extract the switch. (On some models, the upshift switch is integrated into the handle, requiring replacement of the handle or lever assembly).
Install new components
Install the new switch or handle assembly and reconnect the wiring harness.
Reassemble
Reassemble the console and trim panels.
Restore power
Reconnect the battery and turn the key to the ON position.
Test and calibrate
Clear the stored fault codes. Test the upshift function; depending on the tractor model, a transmission/clutch calibration may be required after replacing transmission control components.
