2318 (519178.04) - DEC

Case IH 2318 (519178.04) - DEC – DEC: Lube Oil Pressure Sensor - open circuit or short to GND

Issue description

The engine management system has detected a signal error from the lube oil pressure sensor. The voltage signal is either missing entirely (wire break / open circuit) or is shorted to the chassis ground. This prevents the controller from accurately monitoring engine oil pressure, which can lead to inadequate lubrication warnings, increased engine wear, or forced engine shutdown to prevent catastrophic damage.

Applies to these machines

  • MAXXUM T4E
  • Magnum Tractors
  • MX210
  • MX230
  • MX255
  • MX285
  • 7210
  • 7240
  • 7250
  • 8910

Check the cause

  1. Visual Inspection: Inspect the lube oil pressure sensor and its cabling for obvious signs of damage, wire breaks, or melting.

  2. Wiring & Continuity Test: Check the wiring harness between the sensor and the DEC for continuity. Test the signal wire to ensure it is not shorted to the chassis ground.

  3. Connector Check: Disconnect the sensor and inspect the pins for corrosion, moisture, or poor terminal tension.

  4. Clear & Retest: If a wiring repair is made, restart the engine. The error should clear automatically after the engine is restarted if the circuit is restored.

Repair steps

  1. Safety First

Ensure the machine is turned off, the master power switch is off, and the battery is disconnected. Allow the engine and fluids to cool to prevent burns from hot oil.

  2. Locate the Sensor

Locate the lube oil pressure sensor on the engine block (often located near the oil filter housing).

  3. Prepare for Spills

Place a rag or catch pan under the sensor area to prevent fluids from escaping under pressure.

  4. Remove the Faulty Sensor

Disconnect the electrical connector and carefully unscrew the faulty lube oil pressure sensor.

  5. Install the New Sensor

Install the replacement sensor. Ensure the new O-ring seal is properly seated to prevent leaks. Observe specified tightening torques during assembly.

  6. Reassembly

Reconnect the electrical harness to the new sensor.

  7. Verification

Reconnect the battery, start the engine, and verify that the fault code clears and the oil pressure reads correctly on the dash/monitor.
