Case IH 2321 – ENG: Engine Crankshaft Speed / Position data invalid

The engine control module is receiving an erratic, intermittent, or completely invalid signal from the primary engine speed sensor (the crankshaft position sensor). This loss of synchronization can lead to reduced engine performance, rough idling, or starting issues.

   Visually inspect the crankshaft speed position sensor, its electrical socket, and the wiring harness for physical damage (e.g., from a broken fan belt or field debris).

   Check for related active codes indicating mechanical misalignment between the camshaft and crankshaft (e.g., Fault Code 731). If the engine was recently repaired and the camshaft was removed, the camshaft gear may have been installed incorrectly, causing a phase mismatch rather than a sensor failure.

   Use an electronic service tool or the tractor's diagnostic display to determine if the fault is currently 'Active' or 'Inactive' to identify if it is an ongoing failure or a stored intermittent glitch.

   Locate the sensor

   Find the primary engine speed sensor, which is positioned directly near the engine flywheel casing or the primary timing gear housing.

   Remove the faulty sensor

   Disconnect the 3-pin sealed electrical plug connector from the sensor. Remove the mounting bolt and pull the sensor from the housing.

   Install the new sensor

   Insert the replacement crankshaft speed sensor into the molded bracket alignment slots on the flywheel casing. Secure it with the mounting bolt.

   Reconnect wiring

   Plug the electrical harness back into the sensor, ensuring the weather seal is intact.

   Validate the repair

   Perform a key cycle, start the engine, and let it idle for at least 1 minute. The fault code status displayed on the electronic service tool should change to INACTIVE immediately after the diagnostic runs and passes, and the ECM will turn off the amber CHECK ENGINE lamp.
