Case IH 2322 – ENGINE (ENG) Controller / Engine Control Module (ECM): Engine Camshaft Speed / Position Sensor data invalid
Issue description
The engine controller is receiving erratic, intermittent, or incorrect data from the camshaft speed/position sensor. This variable-reluctance sensor feeds real-time rotational velocity and timing intervals to the engine computer, which relies on this data to optimize precise fuel injection cycles and manage engine timing mapping.

- Patriot Sprayers
- Steiger Series
Check the cause
Check the wiring harness and the integrated pigtail connector leading to the Camshaft Position Sensor for chafing, breaks, or melted insulation.
Inspect the connector terminals for corrosion, moisture, or loose pins. If a pin is loose, the interface harness should be replaced.
Verify the 5-volt reference, ground, and sensor signal circuits between the sensor and the ECM using a multimeter or diagnostic interface harness.
Verify the sensor's physical mounting to ensure it hasn't become loose, which could cause mechanical misalignment or an improper air gap.
Repair steps
Power down and disconnect battery
Power down the machine and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts.
Locate sensor
Locate the Camshaft Speed/Position Sensor on the engine block/timing gear housing.
Disconnect connector
Disconnect the electrical pigtail connector from the sensor.
Remove fastener
Remove the retaining fastener (usually an M6 x 16mm or M6 x 20mm flange bolt) securing the sensor.
Remove sensor
Carefully pull the sensor out of its mounting bore.
Clean mounting surface
Clean the mounting surface and bore, ensuring no debris falls into the engine.
Lubricate O-ring
Lubricate the O-ring on the new sensor with clean engine oil.
Install new sensor
Insert the new sensor into the bore and install the retaining bolt.
Reconnect harness
Reconnect the electrical harness connector until it clicks securely.
Reconnect battery
Reconnect the battery.
Clear fault code
Turn the key on and use a diagnostic scan tool to clear the inactive 2322 fault code.
Verify operation
Start the engine and verify smooth operation without the code returning.
