Case IH 2326 – Transmission Controller (Trans): The Engine RPM sourced from the alternator measured by the controller is excessively high.
Issue description
The controller receives a frequency signal from the alternator that is mathematically higher than the engine's physical capability, or the signal is highly erratic. This is most commonly caused by internal alternator diode failure (causing AC ripple/electrical noise), an incorrectly sized alternator pulley spinning the unit too fast, or a wiring harness short.

Check the cause
Verify alternator pulley size if the alternator was recently replaced (a smaller pulley spins the alternator too fast, generating an excessively high RPM signal).
Measure W terminal frequency (Hz) with a multimeter at idle and high idle to check if the signal is stable or spiking erratically.
Check for AC ripple at the main B+ charging terminal (readings over 0.5V AC indicate failed internal rectifier diodes bleeding noise into the RPM signal).
Inspect the wiring harness between the alternator W terminal and the transmission controller for chafing, exposed copper, or routing too close to high-voltage components.
Repair steps
Secure the Machine
Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, and turn off the engine.
Disconnect Power
Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical shorts during the repair.
Inspect the Drive Belt
Check the serpentine/alternator drive belt and tensioner. While a slipping belt usually causes a low reading, severe belt chatter can sometimes cause erratic signal spikes.
Replace the Alternator
If internal failure is confirmed: Remove the drive belt from the alternator pulley. Disconnect the B+ charging cable, the W terminal (RPM signal) wire, and the D+ (exciter) wire. Remove the mounting bolts and extract the faulty alternator. Crucial Step: Compare the pulley on the new alternator to the old one. If they are different sizes, use an impact wrench to swap the original pulley onto the new alternator. Install the new alternator, torque the mounting bolts to OEM spec, and reattach all wiring securely.
Repair Wiring
If the alternator tested good: trace the W terminal wire back to the transmission controller. Cut out and solder/heat-shrink any damaged sections of the wire to eliminate shorts to ground or power.
Reassemble and Test
Reinstall the drive belt, reconnect the battery, and start the tractor. Clear the inactive 2326 fault code via the cab display monitor. Test drive the tractor to ensure the transmission shifts smoothly and the PTO engages without throwing secondary faults.
