Case IH 2330 – Transmission Controller (Trans / TCU): The Transmission output RPM speed, sourced from the sensor, measured by the controller is too high for the desired gear.

Issue description

The controller is detecting an output shaft RPM that is mathematically too high for the engine RPM and the currently selected gear ratio. This indicates either an electrical malfunction (the sensor or wiring is providing a false, erratic high-speed pulse reading) or a mechanical issue (such as clutch slippage) causing the transmission to fall out of the expected gear ratio.

Check the cause

  1. Check for accompanying fault code 2331 (transmission clutches slipping). If present, the issue is likely mechanical clutch slippage rather than a faulty sensor.

  2. Inspect the wiring harness and weather-pack connector at the transmission output speed sensor for corrosion, pushed-out pins, or wire chafing.

  3. Use a diagnostic service tool to monitor live output speed sensor data while driving, looking for erratic RPM spikes or dropouts.

  4. Use a multimeter to verify the sensor's internal resistance is within OEM specifications.

Repair steps

  1. Park and secure the tractor

    Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, and turn off the engine.

  2. Locate the sensor

    Locate the transmission output speed sensor on the transmission housing (typically near the rear axle housing or output shaft area).

  3. Clean the area

    Thoroughly clean the area around the sensor to prevent dirt or debris from falling into the transmission casing during removal.

  4. Disconnect the electrical connector

    Disconnect the multi-pin electrical connector from the sensor.

  5. Remove the retaining bolt

    Remove the retaining bolt holding the sensor in place.

  6. Remove the old sensor

    Carefully pull the old sensor out of the transmission casing.

  7. Lubricate the new sensor O-ring

    Lubricate the heavy-duty synthetic rubber O-ring on the new transmission speed sensor with clean transmission fluid to ensure a leak-free seal.

  8. Install the new sensor

    Insert the new sensor into the transmission port and tighten the retaining bolt to the specified torque.

  9. Reconnect the electrical connector

    Reconnect the electrical connector, ensuring it clicks securely into place.

  10. Clear the fault code

    Turn on the ignition and use the tractor's AFS Pro display or a diagnostic service tool to clear the stored 2330 fault code.

  11. Perform a test drive

    Perform a test drive to confirm the transmission shifts smoothly, the speedometer reads accurately, and the code does not return.
