Case IH 2331 – Transmission Controller: The transmission clutches are slipping
Issue description
This code indicates that the transmission controller has detected a mismatch between the expected transmission output speed and the actual speed, pointing to mechanical clutch slippage or an invalid speed sensor signal.
Applies to these machines
5 machines- Puma/Mid Range Magnum
- Steiger T4B
- Magnum
- Case IH Magnum 235 – 340 (Series 4)
- Case IH Puma and Steiger series
Check the cause
Clear the fault code and test drive the tractor. Engage each gear to determine if the fault reoccurs. (Note: The fault will not occur when modulating the clutch. When starting in gears 5 or 7, gears 4 or 6 are engaged until the top of the clutch is reached, then gears 5 and 7 are engaged.)
Check tractor speed and engagement: Pay close attention to abnormal noises and sluggish gear engagement.
Determine if the slip is mechanical or electrical: If there is abnormal noise or sluggish engagement, the transmission is physically slipping in certain gears. If there is no sign of clutch slippage, either the engine speed signal or transmission speed signal is invalid.
Inspect Solenoid Connectors: If a specific clutch is identified as slipping, check the faulty clutch solenoid connector. Ensure the connector is plugged in, undamaged, the pins are in the correct position, and the fit is tight.
Repair steps
Address Speed Sensor Issues (If no mechanical slip is felt)
Locate the transmission/axle speed sensor. Disconnect the wiring harness and inspect for corrosion or damage. Remove and replace the axle/transmission speed sensor.
Address Solenoid Issues (If mechanical slip is isolated to specific gears)
Relieve hydraulic pressure and disconnect the battery. Locate the PMV (Proportional Magnetic Valve) solenoid controlling the slipping C1/C2 clutch packs on the transmission valve body. Unbolt the faulty solenoid, clean the mounting surface, and install the replacement solenoid valve.
Recalibrate the Transmission
After replacing any transmission solenoids or speed sensors, you must perform a transmission clutch calibration using the tractor's display monitor or service tool so the controller can relearn the clutch fill times.
