Case IH 2336 – Transmission Control Module (TCU) or central vehicle controller (PCC): Creeper fails to engage
Issue description
The transmission control system has commanded the creeper gear (super-reducer) to engage, but the system does not detect successful engagement. This is typically caused by a mechanical bind, a failed creeper solenoid valve, or a faulty position sensor/potentiometer failing to confirm the shift.

Check the cause
Verify the cab switch: Check the creeper activation switch in the cab and its linkage/wiring to ensure it is sending the correct power signal when activated.
Inspect the wiring harness: Check the wiring harness leading to the creeper solenoid and the creeper potentiometer for any visible damage, shorts, or open circuits.
Test the solenoid: Use a multimeter to check the resistance of the creeper solenoid (a healthy 12V DC solenoid on newer models typically reads around 7.3 Ohms). Verify that it is receiving full voltage when the switch is activated.
Physical inspection: Inspect the solenoid under the valve body for dents. Lightly tap the solenoid with a hammer to see if a stuck internal spool frees up.
Test the potentiometer: If equipped, check the potentiometer for correct resistance (e.g., 4000 Ohms) and ensure it isn't shorted to ground or voltage.
Repair steps
Park and secure tractor
Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, and turn off the engine.
Locate solenoid
Locate the transmission control valve body and identify the specific creeper solenoid valve (often located on the lower plate of the valve body).
Clean area
Thoroughly clean the area around the solenoid to prevent dirt and chaff from entering the hydraulic system.
Disconnect wiring
Disconnect the electrical wiring harness connector from the creeper solenoid.
Remove retaining bolts
Remove the retaining bolts holding the solenoid valve to the valve body. Have a catch pan ready, as you will lose a small amount of hydraulic fluid.
Remove old solenoid
Remove the old solenoid valve and discard the old O-rings.
Prepare new solenoid
Lubricate the new O-rings with clean transmission fluid and install them onto the new solenoid valve.
Install new solenoid
Install the new creeper solenoid valve into the valve body and tighten the retaining bolts to the manufacturer's specified torque.
Reconnect wiring
Reconnect the electrical wiring harness.
Test operation
Start the tractor, check the valve body for hydraulic leaks, and test the creeper gear engagement to ensure the fault code is cleared and the tractor shifts smoothly into the super-reducer gear.
