Case IH 2347 – Transmission Control Unit (TRANS): Low range clutch solenoid - open circuit or short circuit to ground

Issue description

The control module has detected a break in the wiring (open circuit), a wire touching the chassis/ground (short to ground), or a failure within the internal coil of the low range clutch solenoid itself. In tractors equipped with Semi-Powershift (SPS) transmissions, this code can also indicate an overvoltage condition on the same solenoid circuit.

Applies to these machines

  • Magnum
  • Puma/Mid Range Magnum
  • Steiger T4B
  • Puma series
  • Maxxum series
  • Steiger series
  • MX / TG series
  • Farmall 115U

Check the cause

  1. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position.

  2. Locate and disconnect the low range clutch solenoid connector (often designated as connector X-641).

  3. Using a multimeter, measure the resistance between solenoid terminal 1 and terminal 2.

  4. Evaluate the Solenoid: The resistance should read between 8 and 11 Ohms. If the resistance is outside of this specification (or shows infinite resistance/OL), the solenoid coil has failed internally.

  5. Evaluate the Wiring: If the solenoid tests within the 8-11 Ohm range, the solenoid is likely good. You must then check the machine's wiring harness. Disconnect the Transmission/Chassis Control Unit (CCU) connector (e.g., X-095) and test the wires running to the solenoid for continuity, shorts to ground, or shorts to positive voltage.

Repair steps

  1. Replace solenoid

If the solenoid fails the resistance test: Remove the faulty low range clutch solenoid from the transmission valve body/manifold and install a replacement. Ensure the mounting area is clean and the new O-rings/seals are lubricated with clean transmission fluid before installation.

  2. Repair or replace wiring harness

If the wiring harness fails the continuity/short test: Trace the wiring harness from the transmission control module to the solenoid. Look for pinch points, chafed wire insulation rubbing against the chassis, or corroded pins inside the connectors. Repair the damaged wire or replace the affected harness section.

  3. Test and verify

Reconnect all harnesses, clear the fault codes via the diagnostic menu, and test drive the tractor through its ranges to verify the low range clutch engages properly without throwing Code 2347.
