Case IH 2348 – Transmission Control Unit (TCU): Medium range clutch solenoid failure

Issue description

The controller has detected an open circuit or short circuit to ground in the Medium range clutch solenoid. On certain models equipped with a Semi-Powershift (SPS) transmission, this code can also indicate an excess voltage / overvoltage condition in the same circuit.

Applies to these machines

  • Magnum
  • Puma/Mid Range Magnum
  • Steiger T4B
  • Case IH Magnum Series: 235–340 (Series 4)
  • Case IH Magnum MXM series
  • Case IH Magnum MX series
  • Case IH Puma Series: 165, 180, 195, 210
  • Case IH Puma T6000/SWB
  • Case IH Steiger Series: 350–600
  • Case IH Maxxum Series

Check the cause

  1. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position

  2. Locate the transmission control valve block and disconnect the medium range clutch solenoid connector (often designated as X-642)

  3. Using a multimeter, measure the resistance between terminal 1 and terminal 2 on the solenoid itself

  4. Verify the resistance reads between 8 to 11 Ohms; if outside this range or showing an open/short, the solenoid is faulty

  5. If the solenoid tests within specification, inspect the wiring harness between the solenoid and the TCU for a short to ground, a short to positive voltage, or broken wires

Repair steps

  1. Park and secure tractor

Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, and turn off the engine.

  2. Relieve hydraulic pressure

Relieve any residual hydraulic pressure in the transmission system.

  3. Locate valve block

Locate the transmission control valve block (location varies by model, typically on the side or top of the transmission housing).

  4. Clean area

Thoroughly clean the area around the medium range clutch solenoid to prevent dirt and debris from entering the sensitive hydraulic valve body.

  5. Disconnect harness

Disconnect the electrical harness connector from the faulty solenoid.

  6. Remove retaining hardware

Remove the retaining bolts or snap ring holding the solenoid valve in place.

  7. Extract solenoid

Carefully extract the solenoid valve assembly from the manifold.

  8. Lubricate O-rings

Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid valve with clean transmission fluid.

  9. Install new solenoid

Install the new solenoid into the valve block and secure it with the retaining hardware to the manufacturer's specified torque.

  10. Reconnect harness

    Reconnect the electrical harness.

  11. Test and calibrate

Start the tractor, check the valve block for leaks, and clear the fault codes. Note: Depending on the tractor model, a transmission calibration routine may need to be performed via the dash menu or dealer software after replacing a clutch solenoid.
