Case IH 2349 – Transmission Control Module (TRANS): High range clutch solenoid - open circuit or short circuit to ground

Issue description

The controller has detected a break in the wiring (open circuit), a wire touching the chassis/ground (short to ground), or a failed solenoid coil. In Semi-Powershift (SPS) models, this code can also indicate an overvoltage condition on the high range clutch solenoid circuit.

Check the cause

  1. Disconnect the high range clutch solenoid and measure the resistance across its pins. The resistance should be between 8 to 11 Ohms.

  2. Visually inspect the transmission wiring harness. A common issue on these tractors is the harness rubbing against hydraulic pipes, causing the insulation to wear away and shorting the wires to ground.

  3. If the solenoid resistance is within spec, check for a short to positive voltage or ground in the harness. Disconnect the UCM connector (e.g., X-950), turn the ignition switch to the ON position, and measure the voltage between specific connector pins (e.g., X-643 pin 1, wire 7220 (GY) to ground, and X-643 pin 2, wire 57UE (BK) to ground).

Repair steps

  1. Secure the Machine

    Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, and turn off the engine.

  2. Locate the Solenoid

    Locate the transmission valve block where the clutch solenoids are housed (refer to your specific model's hydraulic/transmission schematic to identify the High Range solenoid specifically).

  3. Repair Wiring

    If the diagnostic tests revealed a short or open circuit in the harness (such as rubbed wires), repair the damaged section of the wiring harness using proper weather-sealed connectors, or replace the harness section. Reroute the harness away from hydraulic lines to prevent future chafing.

  4. Replace the Solenoid

    If the solenoid failed the 8-11 Ohm resistance test, clean the area around the solenoid, disconnect the electrical connector, unbolt/unscrew the faulty solenoid, and install the new solenoid with new O-rings (lubricated with clean transmission fluid). Torque to OEM specifications and reconnect the wiring harness.

  5. Clear Codes and Calibrate

    Clear the fault codes using the tractor's diagnostic menu or a CNH EST diagnostic tool. Perform a transmission/clutch calibration routine after replacing a clutch solenoid to ensure smooth gear transitions.
