Case IH 2351 – Transmission Controller (Trans / TCU): The creeper clutch solenoid is open circuit or short to ground

This indicates an electrical failure where the transmission controller detects that the circuit for the creeper clutch solenoid is either broken (open) or has a path directly to the chassis ground (shorted).

   Locate the creeper clutch solenoid on the transmission valve block and visually inspect the wiring harness for chafing, rodent damage, or pinched wires.

   Disconnect the solenoid and check the connector for corrosion, moisture, or pushed-out pins. Apply dielectric grease if the connection is intact but dry.

   Perform a resistance test across the two pins of the creeper clutch solenoid coil using a multimeter. A healthy coil should measure between 7.0 to 9.7 ohms at room temperature (25°C / 77°F). Infinite (OL) indicates an open coil, and near 0 ohms indicates a shorted coil.

   If the solenoid tests within spec, perform a continuity test on the wiring harness from the solenoid connector back to the Transmission Controller to check for breaks or shorts to the chassis ground.

   Prepare machine

   Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, and turn off the engine. Relieve any residual hydraulic pressure if specified by the manual.

   Clean area

   Thoroughly clean the area around the transmission valve block and the creeper clutch solenoid to prevent dirt from entering the transmission housing.

   Disconnect harness

   Disconnect the electrical harness from the faulty solenoid.

   Remove hardware

   Remove the retaining bolts or snap-ring holding the solenoid valve in the valve body.

   Remove solenoid

   Carefully pull the solenoid straight out. Have a shop towel ready, as a small amount of transmission fluid may leak.

   Inspect port

   Inspect the valve body port for any debris or metal shavings.

   Lubricate O-rings

   Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid with clean Case IH Hy-Tran (or equivalent) transmission fluid.

   Install solenoid

   Insert the new solenoid into the valve body and tighten the retaining hardware to OEM torque specifications.

   Reconnect harness

   Reconnect the electrical harness.

    Test and calibrate

    Start the tractor and check for leaks. Clear the fault codes using a diagnostic tool. Note: Depending on the model, a transmission clutch calibration may need to be performed via the tractor's display after replacing a clutch solenoid.
