Case IH 2352 (517966.15) - DEC – Transmission Control Module (TCM): Clutch A solenoid - short to high voltage

Issue description

The control module is detecting electrical current flowing through the Clutch A solenoid circuit even when the module has commanded the solenoid to be turned off. This typically points to a wiring harness shorting to a +12V power source, or an internal failure within the solenoid itself.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the transmission wiring harness between the TCM and the transmission control valve block for chafing, rubbed-through insulation, or rodent damage (common cause of short-to-power faults).

  2. Perform a voltage check: With the tractor off, disconnect the electrical connector at the Clutch A solenoid. Turn the key to the ON position (engine off) and probe the signal wire. A +12V reading indicates the harness is shorted to power.

  3. Measure the resistance across the pins of the Clutch A solenoid and compare to OEM specifications (typically 7-10 ohms). Out of spec resistance or continuity to the solenoid body indicates an internal short.

  4. Disconnect the main connectors at the TCM and inspect the pins for corrosion, moisture ingress, or bent terminals that could bridge circuits.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

    Disconnect the tractor's battery to prevent electrical spikes during the repair.

  2. Address Wiring (If Applicable)

    If the diagnostic tests revealed a harness short, locate the damaged section. Splice and repair the wire using weather-sealed heat-shrink connectors, or replace the affected transmission harness section.

  3. Access the Valve Block

    If the solenoid is faulty, locate the transmission control valve block (typically mounted on the right-hand side of the transmission housing).

  4. Remove the Solenoid

    Clean the area thoroughly to prevent dirt from entering the hydraulic circuit. Remove the retaining bracket or bolt holding the Clutch A solenoid in place, and pull the solenoid straight out of the valve block.

  5. Install the New Solenoid

    Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid with clean transmission fluid. Insert it into the valve block and torque the retaining bolt to OEM specifications.

  6. Reassemble and Clear Codes

    Reconnect the electrical harness and the battery. Use the tractor's diagnostic menu (or a service tool) to clear the stored 2352 fault code.

  7. Perform Clutch Calibration

    Start the tractor and warm the transmission oil to a minimum of 60°C (140°F). You must perform a Transmission Clutch Calibration procedure so the TCM can learn the hydraulic fill time for the new solenoid. Failure to calibrate will result in harsh shifting and secondary fault codes.
