Case IH 2352 – Transmission Control Module (TRANS / TCU): Odd Clutch Solenoid is shorted to +12 Volts, current sensed while driver is off.

Issue description

The transmission controller is detecting electrical current flowing to the Odd Clutch Solenoid even when the controller is not commanding the solenoid to activate (the "driver" circuit is off). This condition points to a short to battery voltage (+12V) in the wiring harness or an internal short within the solenoid itself.

Check the cause

  1. Visual Inspection: Disconnect the Odd Clutch Solenoid connector at the transmission valve body. Inspect the connector pins for corrosion, damage, or pushed-out pins.

  2. Harness Voltage Check: Turn the key ON (engine off). Use a multimeter to measure voltage at the harness connector. If +12V is present when the clutch is not being commanded, there is a short to power in the wiring harness between the transmission controller and the solenoid.

  3. Solenoid Resistance Check: Measure the resistance (Ohms) of the Odd Clutch Solenoid coil itself. If the resistance is extremely low or shows a dead short, the solenoid has failed internally and must be replaced.

  4. Harness Routing Check: Check the transmission wiring harness for chafing, melted insulation, or pinched wires, especially where it routes near the transmission housing or cab mounts.

Repair steps

  1. Park and secure tractor

    Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, and turn off the engine.

  2. Disconnect battery

    Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent accidental short circuits during repair.

  3. Locate solenoid

    Locate the transmission valve body and identify the Odd Clutch Solenoid (refer to the hydraulic/electrical schematic for your specific model; it is typically located on the side of the transmission housing alongside the Even, C1-C2, and C3-C4 clutch solenoids).

  4. Clean area

    Thoroughly clean the area around the solenoid to prevent dirt and debris from entering the transmission valve body.

  5. Disconnect connector

    Disconnect the electrical connector from the Odd Clutch Solenoid.

  6. Remove bolts

    Remove the retaining bolts holding the solenoid in place.

  7. Remove solenoid

    Carefully pull the solenoid out of the valve body. Have a catch pan ready, as some hydraulic fluid will leak out.

  8. Lubricate O-rings

    Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid with clean transmission fluid.

  9. Install new solenoid

    Insert the new solenoid into the valve body and secure it with the retaining bolts.

  10. Reconnect connector

    Reconnect the electrical connector.

  11. Test and verify

    Reconnect the battery, start the tractor, and clear the fault codes. Test drive to verify the transmission shifts correctly and the code does not return.
