Case IH 2356 – Transmission Controller (Trans / TCU): C5-6 clutch Solenoid is shorted to +12 Volts, current sensed while driver is off
Issue description
The control module is detecting electrical current flowing through the circuit for the C5-6 transmission clutch solenoid even when the module is not actively commanding the solenoid to turn on (the 'driver' is off). This points to a short circuit to a 12-volt power source somewhere in the wiring harness, a failed solenoid, or an internal failure within the controller itself.

Check the cause
Inspect the wiring harness running from the Transmission Controller to the transmission control valve block for chafed, pinched, or melted wire insulation that could cause a short to +12V.
Perform a voltage test by disconnecting the C5-6 clutch solenoid connector and checking for voltage with the key ON (engine off, neutral/park). If +12V is present, the harness is shorted to power.
Check the internal resistance of the C5-6 clutch solenoid to ensure it has not failed internally and shorted out.
If the wiring harness is completely isolated and shows no shorts, check the transmission controller for a failed internal driver outputting constant +12V.
Repair steps
Park the tractor on a level surface, turn off the engine, engage the parking brake, and disconnect the battery.
Ensure the machine is safe to work on before beginning repairs.
Locate the transmission control valve manifold block on the side of the transmission housing.
This is where the C5-6 clutch solenoid is housed.
Clean the exterior of the valve block thoroughly around the C5-6 solenoid.
This prevents any dirt or debris from entering the hydraulic system during removal.
Disconnect the electrical connector from the faulty C5-6 clutch solenoid.
Isolate the solenoid from the wiring harness.
Remove the retaining bolt or hex socket plug holding the solenoid in the valve body.
Free the solenoid for extraction.
Carefully pull the old solenoid valve out of the manifold.
Remove the faulty component.
Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid with clean transmission/hydraulic fluid.
Ensures a proper seal and prevents O-ring damage during installation.
Insert the new solenoid into the valve body and secure it with the retaining bolt/plug.
Install the replacement component.
Reconnect the electrical connector and the battery.
Restore power and control to the solenoid.
Clear the fault codes using the tractor's diagnostic interface.
Reset the system to verify the repair.
Perform a transmission clutch calibration procedure.
Important: Because a new clutch solenoid will have slightly different flow characteristics, you must perform this calibration before returning the tractor to field service.
