Case IH 2357 – TCU: Low Clutch Solenoid Shorted to +12V
Issue description
The Transmission Controller detects electrical current flowing through the low clutch solenoid circuit even when the module is not actively commanding the solenoid to open. This indicates a short circuit to a +12V power source, which could be caused by a chafed wiring harness, a bridged connection in a connector, or an internal short within the solenoid itself. On Steiger models, this is designated as a short-circuit in the 4R clutch solenoid valve.

Check the cause
Turn the key switch to the OFF position, disconnect the transmission harness from the Low Clutch (or 4R) Solenoid, and inspect the harness connector and solenoid pins for corrosion, water ingress, or bent pins.
With the solenoid disconnected, turn the key switch ON (engine OFF) and use a multimeter to probe the solenoid control wire on the harness side. If +12 Volts is present, the wiring harness is shorted to power.
Measure the resistance across the pins of the Low Clutch Solenoid coil and compare the reading to OEM specifications. If out of range or showing a dead short, the solenoid has failed internally.
Repair steps
Preparation
Park the machine on a level surface, engage the parking brake, turn the key switch OFF, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes.
Clean the area
Locate the transmission control valve block and thoroughly clean the area around the Low Clutch (or 4R) solenoid to prevent dirt or debris from entering the transmission hydraulic system.
Harness repair
If the diagnostic checks revealed a harness short, trace the wire back to the Transmission Controller, locate the chafed section, and splice/repair the wire using weather-sealed connectors.
Solenoid replacement
If the solenoid failed the resistance check, remove the retaining bolt and bracket holding the faulty solenoid cartridge. Pull the cartridge out, discard old O-rings, lubricate new O-rings with clean transmission fluid, insert the new solenoid, and torque the retaining bolt to OEM specifications.
Reassembly
Reconnect the electrical harness to the solenoid and reconnect the battery.
Calibration
Turn the key ON and clear the inactive fault codes. Perform a transmission clutch calibration (quick fill adjustment) via the tractor display monitor so the controller can relearn the engagement characteristics of the new solenoid.
