Case IH 2358 – Transmission Controller (Trans / TCU): Mid Clutch Solenoid is shorted to +12 Volts, Current sensed while driver is off.
Issue description
The control module is detecting electrical current flowing to the Mid Clutch Solenoid even when the module is not commanding the clutch to engage (the driver is off). This indicates that the circuit is receiving unintended power, usually due to a wiring harness shorting to a +12V power source, an internal short in the solenoid coil, or a failed (stuck closed) internal driver inside the control module itself.

Check the cause
Inspect the wiring harness running from the Transmission Controller to the Mid Clutch Solenoid for rubbed, melted, or chafed wires shorting to a constant +12V power wire.
Perform a voltage test: Disconnect the electrical connector at the Mid Clutch Solenoid, turn the key ON (engine off, transmission in neutral/park), and probe the supply pin. +12V present indicates a short to power in the harness.
Test the resistance of the Mid Clutch Solenoid coil with a multimeter to ensure it is not internally shorted.
Verify the Transmission Controller (TCU): If the wiring harness and solenoid test perfectly fine, the controller likely has a faulty internal driver falsely sending voltage or misreading the circuit.
Repair steps
Preparation
Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, turn off the engine, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes during repair.
Access the Valve Manifold
Locate the range transmission powershift valve manifold on top of the transmission housing. Identify the Mid Clutch Solenoid (e.g., Connector No. 37 on MX Magnums).
Wiring Repair
If a short was found in the harness, cut out the damaged section, solder and heat-shrink a new wire, and secure it inside a protective wire loom.
Solenoid Replacement
Thoroughly clean the area around the solenoid to prevent dirt from entering the transmission valve body. Disconnect the electrical connector, remove the retaining hardware, and pull the solenoid cartridge valve out of the manifold. Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid with clean transmission fluid, install the new solenoid, torque the retaining hardware to OEM specifications, and plug in the connector.
Controller Replacement
If diagnostics point to the TCU, replace the Transmission Controller module.
Recalibration
Reconnect the battery. Use an Electronic Service Tool (EST) or the in-cab display to clear the fault codes. You must perform a transmission clutch calibration; replacing transmission components or the controller will uncalibrate the clutches, triggering secondary codes (e.g., 2368) until the relearn procedure is completed.
