Case IH 2359 – Transmission Controller (Trans): High Clutch Solenoid is shorted to +12 Volts, current sensed while driver is off

Issue description

The control module is detecting electrical current flowing through the High Range Clutch Solenoid circuit even when the controller's internal driver (switch) is commanded to the "OFF" position. This points to a short-to-power (+12V) in the wiring harness or an internal short within the solenoid coil itself.

Check the cause

  1. Disconnect the electrical connector at the High Clutch Solenoid (located on the powershift valve manifold) and inspect the wiring harness routed back to the Transmission Controller for chafing, melted insulation, or pinched wires.

  2. With the key ON but the tractor not commanding the high clutch, probe the harness connector to see if +12V is improperly present.

  3. Measure the resistance of the High Clutch Solenoid coil. If the resistance is out of specification, the solenoid is internally shorted.

  4. Inspect the pins at the Transmission Controller for corrosion, damage, or bridging that could cause a short.

Repair steps

  1. Power down and disconnect battery

    Power down the tractor, engage the parking brake, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Locate manifold

    Locate the range transmission powershift valve manifold, which is mounted on top of the range transmission.

  3. Identify solenoid

    Identify the High Clutch Solenoid on the manifold.

  4. Disconnect harness

    Disconnect the electrical harness connector from the solenoid.

  5. Repair wiring

    If the diagnostic checks pointed to a wiring issue, repair or replace the damaged section of the transmission harness.

  6. Remove solenoid

    If the solenoid is internally shorted, remove the retaining nut/bolt securing the solenoid cartridge valve to the manifold.

  7. Extract cartridge

    Carefully extract the old solenoid cartridge and discard the old O-rings.

  8. Lubricate O-rings

    Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid cartridge with clean transmission fluid (Case IH Hy-Tran).

  9. Install new solenoid

    Install the new solenoid valve into the manifold and tighten to the manufacturer's torque specification.

  10. Reconnect electricals

    Reconnect the electrical harness and reconnect the battery.

  11. Clear fault codes

    Start the tractor and clear the fault codes.

  12. Calibrate transmission clutch

    Perform a transmission clutch calibration. Replacing a clutch solenoid alters the fill times and pressures. Failing to calibrate will likely result in subsequent fault codes (such as 2369: High range clutch not calibrated).
