Case IH 2361 – TRANS: The creeper clutch solenoid is shorted to +12 Volts, current sensed while the driver is off
Issue description
The transmission controller is detecting electrical current flowing through the creeper clutch solenoid circuit even when the controller has commanded the circuit to be "off" (de-energized). This indicates that the solenoid's wiring has shorted to a 12-volt power source, or the solenoid itself has failed internally, causing unintended power delivery.

Check the cause
Key Off / Battery Disconnect: Ensure the machine is off to prevent accidental shorting during testing.
Inspect the Wiring Harness: Trace the wiring harness from the transmission controller to the creeper clutch solenoid on the transmission valve block. Look for chafed wires, melted insulation, or pinched harnesses that could be bridging the solenoid wire to a constant +12V power wire.
Test for Short to Power: Disconnect the electrical connector at the creeper clutch solenoid. Using a multimeter, check the supply pin on the harness side for voltage when the tractor is keyed on but the creeper gear is not engaged. If 12 volts are present, the wiring harness is shorted to power and must be repaired.
Test the Solenoid Coil: If the harness tests fine, measure the resistance (Ohms) across the pins of the creeper clutch solenoid itself. If the resistance is out of specification (shorted internally), the solenoid is the culprit.
Repair steps
Disconnect Power
Turn off the tractor and disconnect the negative battery cable.
Locate the Solenoid
Locate the transmission valve block and identify the creeper clutch solenoid valve.
Harness Repair (If Applicable)
If the diagnostic checks revealed a wiring short, splice and repair the damaged section of the wiring harness using weather-sealed connectors, or replace the affected harness section.
Solenoid Replacement (If Applicable)
Clean the area around the solenoid to prevent dirt from entering the hydraulic system. Disconnect the electrical connector from the solenoid. Unbolt and remove the faulty creeper clutch solenoid valve from the transmission block. Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid with clean hydraulic fluid. Install the new solenoid and torque to OEM specifications. Reconnect the electrical connector.
Reassemble and Test
Reconnect the battery. Start the tractor and clear the stored fault codes.
Calibration
Engage the creeper gear to verify proper operation. Note that replacing transmission clutch solenoids often requires running a transmission calibration procedure via the tractor's display monitor to ensure smooth shifting.
