Case IH 2366 – Transmission Control Unit (TCU) / TRANS module: C3-4 Clutch not calibrated
Issue description
The transmission controller does not have valid calibration values saved for the C3-4 clutch pack. This typically happens if a calibration procedure was interrupted, failed to complete successfully, the tractor's battery died/was replaced, or if a new Transmission Control Unit (TCU) was installed without a subsequent calibration.
Applies to these machines
5 machines- Magnum
- Puma/Mid Range Magnum
- Steiger T4B
- Case IH Magnum Series
- Case IH Steiger / Quadtrac Series
Check the cause
Check for active hardware fault codes for the C3-4 clutch solenoid (e.g., TRANS 106) and fix electrical issues first.
Check the transmission hydraulic fluid level and condition, as low fluid causes erratic clutch fill times.
Ensure the transmission fluid is warmed up to operating temperature (60°C to 105°C / 140°F to 221°F).
Perform a safety check by parking the tractor on a flat, open surface away from obstacles, as it may lunge during calibration.
Repair steps
Prepare the Tractor
Park in a clear area, engage the parking brake, and ensure the transmission oil is warmed up to at least 60°C (140°F).
Enter Configuration Mode
Turn the key switch to the ON position. Within 10 seconds, press and hold the 'Enter' (or 'Prog') key on the keypad to bring up the CONFIG MENU. (Note: On some older STX/MX models, you hold the 'Prog' or 'Reset/Prog' button while starting the engine).
Navigate to the TCU
Use the down arrow key to highlight TCU and press Enter.
Access Calibration Menu
Scroll down to the ETC MENU or TRANS SETUP screen and press Enter. Then, scroll to Cltch Cal (Clutch Calibration) and press Enter.
Verify Temperature
The screen will display Oil Deg (the current transmission fluid temperature). If it is within the acceptable range, press Enter to continue.
Run the Calibration
The display will prompt you to calibrate the clutches (it will cycle through them, e.g., C1-2, C3-4, etc.). Press Enter to begin the calibration for the prompted clutch.
Wait for Completion
The controller will automatically modulate the solenoid to fill the clutch. You will hear the engine load change. Once it finds the correct fill volume/pressure, it will display a calibration number followed by an asterisk (*).
Cycle Through All Clutches
Press Enter to accept the value and move to the next clutch. Repeat this until the display reads Trans Cal Complete.
Save and Exit
Exit the menu, turn the tractor key to the OFF position, and wait at least 30 seconds before restarting. This allows the TCU to write the new calibration values to its non-volatile memory.
Parts you might need
(3)C3-4 Clutch Proportional Solenoid Valve
Exact OEM part number depends on the specific transmission serial number. Controls hydraulic flow to the C3-4 clutch pack.
Transmission Control Unit (TCU)
Required if the module fails to retain calibration memory after a key cycle.
Transmission Filters & Hy-Tran Fluid
Required if the fluid is burnt or contaminated, which can cause sticking solenoids.
