Case IH 2372 – Engine Control Unit (ENG / ECU): Engine Fuel Filter clogged error / Engine stall - shift to neutral

Issue description

When the engine fuel filter becomes severely restricted, the engine is starved of fuel and stalls under load. Because the tractor stalled while in gear, the vehicle's safety interlock system triggers the 'shift to neutral' prompt, requiring the operator to shift the transmission into neutral before the engine can be restarted.

Applies to these machines

  • Steiger T4B
  • Case IH Magnum Tractors (MX Magnum, N.A. Models 215, 245, 275, 305, 335, EU Models 225, 250, 280, 310, 335)
  • Case IH Maxxum & MX Series (51/52 series, MX100 through MX170)
  • Case IH Farmall Series (65A through 115A, 90M, 100M, 110M)
  • Case IH Puma Series
  • Case IH Steiger/Quadtrac Series

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the primary and secondary fuel filters/water separators for heavy restriction, gelling, or clogging

  2. Check the fuel tank for stale, gelled, or contaminated fuel (water, algae, or debris)

  3. Inspect the fuel lines and the fuel tank vent line for kinks, collapses, or clogs

  4. Check the fuel tank pick-up tube screen for obstructions

Repair steps

  1. Clear Line Obstructions

If fuel lines or vent lines are kinked, replace them. If clogged, blow out the lines with compressed air to remove the obstruction.

  2. Drain Contaminants

If the fuel is found to be contaminated or stale, drain the fuel tank completely and refill with fresh, clean diesel.

  3. Remove Filter

Unscrew and remove the obstructed engine fuel filter(s) and discard.

  4. Install New Filter

Lubricate the sealing ring of the new OEM fuel filter with clean diesel fuel and install it onto the filter housing.

  5. Prime the System

Bleed the fuel system using the manual primer pump to remove any trapped air from the lines.

  6. Reset Interlock

Shift the tractor's transmission into neutral to clear the 'Engine stall - shift to neutral' safety interlock.

  7. Clear Codes

Start the engine. Use the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to clear the logged 2372 fault code from the Engine ECU and verify the tractor operates under load without stalling.
