Case IH 2374 – Transmission Controller (TRANS / TCU): Master Clutch Solenoid Open Circuit or Short to Ground

Issue description

This fault code indicates an electrical failure in the master clutch control circuit. The transmission controller monitors the voltage on the master clutch solenoid circuit. If the voltage drops lower than expected, the controller determines that the circuit is either open, shorted to ground, or has lost its power supply.

Applies to these machines

  • Magnum
  • Case IH Magnum
  • Case IH Steiger
  • Case IH Puma

Check the cause

  1. Check the wire harness between the master clutch solenoid and the transmission controller for chafing, pinched wires, or a direct short to the chassis (ground).

  2. Verify that power is available from the neutral latch relay. An open circuit in the solenoid power wire will trigger this code.

  3. Inspect the connectors at both the solenoid and the transmission controller for corrosion, moisture, or pushed-out pins.

  4. Measure the resistance of the master clutch solenoid coil with a multimeter to determine if the coil itself has failed internally (open or shorted).

  5. If the wiring and solenoid test perfectly, verify the transmission controller, as it may have failed and is unable to send or read the voltage properly.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Disconnect the tractor's battery before servicing transmission electrical components to prevent accidental shorts.

  2. Repair Wiring (If Applicable)

If the diagnostic checks revealed a broken wire or corroded connector, splice/repair the wiring harness or replace the damaged connector terminal.

  3. Replace the Solenoid (If Applicable)

Locate the master clutch solenoid (on Magnum models, this is typically on the left side of the transmission, just to the rear of the steps, facing outward). Remove the solenoid retaining nut and slide the old coil off the cartridge, or remove the entire cartridge valve if replacing the whole assembly. Install the new master clutch solenoid. Torque the hydraulic cartridge to approximately 18 ft-lbs and the solenoid retaining nut to 5-6 ft-lbs.

  4. Recalibrate

Reconnect the battery. Clear the fault codes using a diagnostic tool. It is highly recommended to perform a transmission clutch calibration after replacing transmission solenoids to ensure smooth shifting.

Parts you might need

(2)
  • Master Clutch Solenoid (Transmission Solenoid Valve)

    51523989

Genuine CNH Industrial part. Fits Case IH Magnum, Steiger, and New Holland equivalents. Verify exact fitment with your specific serial number, as some models allow you to replace just the solenoid coil rather than the entire valve block.

  • Master Clutch Solenoid (Transmission Solenoid Valve)

    84167521

    Older superseded part number.
