Case IH 2381 – CCU (Central Control Unit) or XA Module (EPL Controller): Parklock – bus off

Issue description

The Electronic Park Lock (EPL) module is detected on the diagnostic line but has lost communication on the CAN (Controller Area Network) bus. The system is registering a 'bus off' state, meaning the module is unable to transmit or receive CAN messages.

Applies to these machines

  • Optum
  • Case IH Puma CVT / CVX Series (Puma 150, 165, 170, 180, 185, 195, 200, 210, 215, 225, 230, 240 CVT)
  • Case IH Magnum CVT Series (Magnum 225)

Check the cause

  1. Battery and Voltage Check: Ensure the battery is fully charged, load-tested, and that the battery cables are clean and tight.

  2. Power and Ground Verification: Turn the ignition switch ON. Measure the voltage at the EPL connector (e.g., connector X-745, pin C1). Verify that there is a steady 12V supply and a solid ground.

  3. CAN Bus Wiring Inspection: Check the CAN bus wiring harness between the EPL module and the CCU for open circuits, short circuits to ground, or short circuits to power.

  4. Diagnostic Menu Access: Use the diagnostic test switch (special tool 380000843) in the tractor's diagnostic connector to access the 'H' menu mode routine and view the EPL sub-system values.

Repair steps

  1. Repair Wiring

If an open or short circuit is found during the diagnostic checks, repair or replace the affected wire harness.

  2. Clear EPL Memory

If the wiring is intact and 12V is present, access the diagnostic menu. Using H8 in the XA module, clear the EPL memory (EEPROM stored calibration information).

  3. Re-enable the EPL

Using H3 in the XA module, re-enable the EPL configurations and options.

  4. Re-calibrate the EPL

Perform the H1 calibration procedure to re-calibrate the Electronic Park Lock actuator.

  5. Test the System

Cycle the key, operate the system, and check if the error code returns.

  6. Replace the Actuator

If the error code persists, or if it is not possible to calibrate the EPL, the internal electronics of the actuator have failed. Remove and replace the EPL actuator/controller assembly.

  7. Final Calibration

Calibrate the newly installed EPL assembly using the H1 calibration procedure.
