Case IH 2382-03 - BCM – BCM: Work Lamp #5 / Tractor Clearance Light Short Circuit to B+

Issue description

The wiring or component for Work Lamp #5 is shorted directly to battery positive voltage (B+). This means the controller is detecting high voltage on the circuit when it should not be present, or power is bypassing the normal load. When a short occurs, it often causes the circuit breaker to trip, resulting in the lights shutting off to protect the system.

Applies to these machines

  • MAGNUM AFS Connect
  • Magnum 7130
  • Magnum 7220
  • Magnum 7240
  • Magnum 225 CVT
  • Steiger series
  • Axial-Flow combines

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the affected work lamp fixture and connections inside the housing for lost insulation or shorts

  2. Check for aftermarket additions like extra lights or higher-output bulbs that may be overloading the circuit

  3. Test the circuit breaker and relay, as breakers can go 'soft' with age and trip at lower currents

  4. Inspect the wiring harness in the fenders or cab corners for poor connections or rubbed wiring causing a short to a power source

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery to prevent further electrical damage or blown fuses.

  2. Disassemble the Work Lamp

Remove the retaining screws, then take off the rim and lens from the casing.

  3. Remove the Bulb and Socket

Remove the spring that secures the socket, then remove the bulb from the socket. Inspect the internal pigtail wires for melted insulation or bare wires touching.

  4. Repair the Wiring

If a short is found in the housing or the immediate wiring harness, cut out the damaged section and splice in new insulated wire, or replace the entire socket assembly.

  5. Replace the Breaker/Relay

If the wiring is intact but the circuit continues to trip and reset, locate the fuse/relay panel (often under the hood beside the firewall or air cleaner) and replace the corresponding circuit breaker or relay.

  6. Upgrade to LEDs

If the circuit is prone to overloading, replacing traditional halogen work lamps with LED work lamps will significantly lower the current draw and prevent the breakers from tripping.
