Case IH 2382 – Transmission Control Module (TCU): 5th shaft speed sensor short to ground
Issue description
The control module has detected a short circuit to earth (ground) on the signal circuit of the 5th shaft speed sensor. The signal voltage has dropped to zero or an abnormally low level, which is typically caused by the sensor's wiring harness rubbing against the chassis and shorting out, or an internal failure/short within the sensor itself. When this sensor fails, the transmission may go into a forced neutral state or lose specific gears associated with the 5th shaft forward clutch.

Check the cause
Visually inspect the transmission wiring harness leading to the 5th shaft speed sensor for any signs of chafing, melting, or breaks that could cause a short to the tractor's chassis.
Perform a harness voltage check: Turn the ignition switch to the ON position. Disconnect the harness from the speed sensor. Use a multi-meter to check for voltage from the harness side of the connector (Pin 1 / Cavity A) to chassis ground. You should read a 5.0V reference voltage. If it reads 0V or indicates a short to ground, the wiring harness is damaged and must be repaired.
Perform a sensor resistance test: With the sensor disconnected, measure the internal resistance of the sensor across its pins (Cavity A and Cavity B). The resistance should measure between 2700 to 3300 ohms at 20°C (68°F). If the resistance is outside of this specification (e.g., showing continuity to ground), the sensor has failed internally and must be replaced.

Test drive the tractor. Go to the monitor screen, select "INST TRANS OUTPUT SPEED," and monitor the RPMs for all 5 shafts to verify the 5th shaft speed sensor is reading correctly and the code does not return.
