Case IH 2383 – Transmission Control Unit (TCU) / Transmission Controller: Open circuit or short circuit to + BAT of the 4th gear/shaft speed sensor

The control module is detecting a voltage that is too high (shorted to battery positive) or a complete lack of electrical continuity (open circuit) on the circuit that monitors the rotational speed of the transmission's 4th shaft.

   Visually inspect the connector at the 4th shaft speed sensor to ensure it is securely connected, undamaged, and pins are tightly fitted.

   Inspect the wiring harness for physical damage, breaks, or rubbed areas.

   With the ignition ON and engine off, disconnect the harness from the sensor and check for a 5.0 V reference from the harness side (pin 1) to chassis ground.

   Check for continuity between the sensor connector and the transmission controller pins.

   Test the signal wire to ensure it is not receiving stray 12V battery power (short to battery).

   Access the Sensor

   Locate the 4th shaft speed sensor on the transmission housing (often accessible near the front bearing housings/clutch valve area for the 4th shaft).

   Address Wiring Issues

   If your diagnostic checks revealed an open circuit (no continuity) or a short to battery voltage in the harness, repair or replace the damaged section of the transmission wiring harness.

   Replace the Sensor

   If the wiring harness tests perfectly (good continuity, proper 5.0V reference, no shorts) but the fault code remains active, the sensor has failed internally. Remove the retaining bolt and pull the defective 4th shaft speed sensor from the transmission housing.

   Install New Part

   Lubricate the O-ring on the new sensor, install it into the port, and tighten the retaining hardware. Securely click the electrical connector back into place.

   Clear Codes and Test

   Use the machine's display monitor or an Electronic Service Tool (EST) to clear the inactive fault codes. Operate the tractor and monitor the transmission shaft RPMs on the A-post display to verify the 4th shaft is reading correctly and the code does not return.
