Case IH 2384 – Transmission Control Module (TCU) / Drive Control: 4th shaft speed sensor short to ground

Issue description

The control module has detected that the electrical circuit for the 4th shaft/gear speed sensor has a short to ground, preventing the sensor from sending a valid speed signal to the controller.

Applies to these machines

  • Steiger T4B
  • Steiger 4WD
  • STX
  • Quadtrac
  • PowerDrive
  • Magnum
  • Puma

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the connectors between the 4th shaft speed sensor and the ECU for damage, ensuring pins are tight and in the correct position.

  2. Turn the ignition switch ON, disconnect the harness from the speed sensor, and check for voltage from the harness side of the connector (typically pin 1) to chassis ground (should be a 5.0 V reference signal).

  3. Test the sensor wiring harness for continuity to ground. If there is continuity to ground on the signal wire when disconnected from the ECU and sensor, there is a short to ground in the harness.

Repair steps

  1. Locate the Sensor

Locate the 4th shaft speed sensor on the transmission housing.

  2. Isolate the Fault

Based on the diagnostic checks, determine if the short is in the wiring harness or internal to the sensor.

  3. Repair the Harness

If the multi-meter shows continuity to ground in the wiring, trace the transmission wire harness to locate the chafed or damaged section. Repair the damaged wires or replace the transmission wire harness section.

  4. Replace the Sensor

If the wiring harness tests good (no short to ground in the wires), the short is internal to the sensor. Remove the defective 4th shaft speed sensor.

  5. Install New Sensor

Install the replacement speed sensor. Fitment Note: On some Steiger transmissions, multiple speed sensors share the same part number but use different spacers to set the sensor depth. Ensure any spacers are correctly transferred or installed.

  6. Clear Codes

Reconnect the harness, clear the fault code using an Electronic Service Tool (EST) or by cycling the machine, and operate the tractor to verify the fault code does not return.
