Case IH 2386 – TCU: 3rd Shaft Speed Sensor Short to Ground
Issue description
The transmission controller has detected that the signal voltage from the 3rd shaft speed sensor has dropped to zero. This condition is typically caused by a wiring harness shorting out against the tractor chassis or an internal short within the sensor itself, which prevents the controller from reading the rotational speed of the 3rd transmission shaft.

Check the cause
Monitor Live Data: Access the tractor's diagnostic monitor (e.g., A-post display or Pro 700 display) and navigate to the transmission diagnostics menu. Watch the live RPMs for all 5 transmission shafts. Check if the 3rd shaft shows 0 RPM or erratic readings while the tractor is moving.
Visual Wiring Inspection: Inspect the wiring harness leading to the transmission speed sensors for visible damage, rubbing, or pinched wires that could cause a short to ground against the transmission housing.
Connector Check: Disconnect the sensor's electrical connector (typically a Metri-Pack 280 style connector) and check for moisture, corrosion, or damaged pins.
Circuit Testing: Use a multimeter to test the circuit. If there is continuity to ground on the signal wire while the sensor is unplugged, the short is in the wiring harness. If the short disappears when unplugged, the sensor itself has failed internally.
Repair steps
Locate the sensor
Locate the 3rd shaft speed sensor on the transmission housing. There are three speed sensors on these transmissions: one on top towards the rear (accessible from the pivot joint/under the cab), and two on the bottom left-hand side towards the rear.
Disconnect
Unplug the electrical connector from the faulty sensor.
Remove
Remove the retaining bolt securing the sensor to the transmission housing and carefully pull the sensor out.
Transfer the spacer (CRITICAL STEP)
All three transmission speed sensors use the exact same part number, but they use different spacers to set the correct depth for each specific shaft. You must retain the spacer from the old 3rd shaft sensor and install it on the new sensor to ensure proper clearance from the tone ring.
Install
Insert the new sensor (with the correct spacer) into the transmission housing and tighten the mounting bolt.
Reconnect
Reconnect the electrical connector, ensuring the weather seal is fully seated.
Clear and test
Clear the fault codes using the diagnostic monitor and test drive the tractor through its gears to verify proper transmission shifting and accurate speed readings.
