Case IH 2387 – UCM (User Control Module): Shuttle lever neutral switch - voltage too low
Issue description
This code indicates that the voltage signal coming from the neutral switch (specifically the momentary neutral button on the shuttle lever) has dropped below the acceptable threshold. This is most commonly caused by a mechanical failure where the neutral button physically sticks or binds inside the lever assembly, though it can also be triggered by electrical faults.
Applies to these machines
5 machines- Optum
- Case IH Magnum Series
- Case IH Puma Series
- Case IH Steiger / Quadtrac Series
- Case IH Maxxum Series
Check the cause
Physically inspect the momentary neutral button on the FNRP lever. If it feels sticky, binds up, or does not spring back properly, the lever assembly is the culprit.
Ensure the tractor's battery voltage is sufficient, as low system voltage can trigger this code.
Check the electrical connector at the base of the shuttle lever for moisture, dust, or damaged pins.
Inspect the wiring circuit between the shuttle lever and the UCM for open circuits, shorts to ground, or chafing.
Repair steps
Temporary Fix (Field Repair)
If the tractor is stuck in the field, you can temporarily disassemble the lever housing and lubricate the internal neutral button mechanism. This will sometimes free up the binding button and allow you to shift out of park/neutral.
Permanent Fix (Replacement)
The official repair is to replace the entire FNRP lever assembly. CNH has updated the lever assembly with a different neutral button setup to prevent this sticking issue from recurring.
Installation
Disconnect the battery, remove the steering column trim to access the lever mounting bracket, unplug the multi-pin connector, and unbolt the old lever. Install the new lever and plug in the connector.
Clear Codes
Once the new lever is installed, use the electronic service tool or display to clear the error code and test the system for normal forward/reverse operation.
