Case IH 24 – Transmission Controller: None of the transmission clutches are calibrated

Issue description

The clutch pack pulse-width modulated (PWM) solenoid calibration values are out of the acceptable range or are not registered in the system. This is typically triggered by a new transmission controller installation, an erased/reset non-volatile memory (H8), or an incomplete clutch pack calibration procedure.

Applies to these machines

  • MX Magnum
  • STX Steiger
  • JXC
  • Case IH Magnum Series
  • Magnum 235-340 Series 4
  • Case IH TG Series
  • Case IH Maxxum Series
  • MXM 120-190
  • Case IH Puma Series
  • Case IH STX Steiger 4WD Tractors
  • Case IH JX Series
  • JX1090U

Check the cause

  1. Check controller configuration: Verify the controller is configured to the correct transmission type (resolve fault code C0 first if present)

  2. Warm up the tractor: Ensure the hydraulic/transmission fluid is at normal operating temperature before attempting calibration

  3. Check for voltage/sensor codes: Ensure there are no active codes for battery voltage (e.g., Code 70) or wheel speed sensors (e.g., Code 77) that can prevent calibration

Repair steps

  1. Start the tractor and ensure the hydraulic fluid is up to operating temperature.

  2. Enter the tractor's "H" menu (Diagnostic/Service Mode).

On many models, this is done by holding the upshift and downshift buttons simultaneously while starting the tractor.

  3. Navigate through the HH Transmission Service Menu to segment H1 (Clutch Calibration).

  4. Put the tractor in gear.

The tractor will not actually drive while in diagnostic mode, though it may lurch slightly.

  5. Hold the upshift button to begin the automated calibration.

The controller will systematically engage each clutch pack, measuring the electrical current (mA) required to cause a measurable drop in engine RPM.

  6. Continue following the on-screen prompts until all clutch packs (A, B, etc.) have been successfully calibrated.

  7. Exit the diagnostic menu and restart the tractor to verify Code 24 has cleared.
