Case IH 2402 – Transmission Control Unit (TCU): Upshift and downshift switches both closed

Issue description

The system is receiving a simultaneous "closed circuit" signal from both the upshift and downshift command switches. Because an operator cannot physically request an upshift and a downshift at the exact same time, the system recognizes this as an electrical fault (typically a short circuit or a mechanically stuck switch) and will often disable transmission shifting or default to a safe state to prevent clutch damage.

Applies to these machines

  • Puma/Mid Range Magnum
  • Magnum Series (235, 250, 280, 310, 340)
  • Maxxum Series (MXM 120, 130, 140, 155, 175, 190)
  • Steiger / Quadtrac Series

Check the cause

  1. Monitor live data using the tractor's diagnostic mode (H-Menu) or Electronic Service Tool (EST) to see if both switches read 'closed' without physical input.

  2. Perform a switch continuity test by disconnecting the shift lever/multicontroller switch harness and testing the upshift and downshift switches with a multimeter. Continuity at rest indicates an internally shorted or stuck switch.

  3. Inspect the wiring harness between the shift console and the transmission controller for chafed wires, pinched harnesses under the cab floor, or melted insulation causing a short circuit.

  4. Check the voltage supply to the transmission controller and ensure the ground resistance is less than 1 ohm with no electrical accessories switched on.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical spikes during repair.

  2. Access the Switch

Remove the armrest console cover, shift lever housing, or right-hand control panel to access the gear selector switch assembly.

  3. Disconnect Harness

Unplug the electrical connector leading to the upshift/downshift switch.

  4. Replace the Switch

If your diagnostic checks proved the switch was stuck closed, remove the retaining screws or clips holding the switch plate/assembly in place. Install the new switch assembly and secure it.

  5. Repair Wiring

If the switch was not the culprit, locate the shorted wires in the chassis/cab harness and repair them using heat-shrink connectors and fresh loom.

  6. Reassembly

Reconnect the electrical harness and reassemble the console plastics.

  7. Clear Codes & Calibrate

Reconnect the battery. Turn the key on and clear the stored fault codes from the transmission controller memory. Test drive the tractor to verify normal shifting. (Note: Depending on the exact model, a transmission calibration may be recommended after electrical repairs to ensure smooth clutch engagement).

Parts you might need

(2)
  • CONTROL ASSEMBLY - pulser, upshift or downshift

    60-6483T92

    Older 4WD Models (e.g., 9300 Series)

  • Upshift/Downshift Switch Assembly, Gear Selector Switch, or Multicontroller Handle

Generic part name; for newer models (Magnum/Puma/Maxxum), buttons are integrated into the Multicontroller joystick or switch pod.
