Case IH 2407 – Transmission Control Unit (TCU): Range shift synchroniser did not engage during a shuttle shift.

When the operator commanded a directional change (shuttle shift), the transmission's range shift synchronizer failed to physically engage the requested gear, or the synchronizer's position sensor (potentiometer) failed to detect the engagement within the specified time limit. This is typically caused by a loss of hydraulic pressure, contaminated transmission fluid causing sticking spool valves, or mechanical wear/failure of the synchronizer itself.

   Check the transmission oil level and condition for contamination or degradation (number one trigger for transmission hesitation and sticking spool valves).

   Perform a hydraulic pressure test under load to check for internal leakage, weak relief valves, or worn pumps.

   Connect a diagnostic tool (or use the tractor's onboard HH Menu) to monitor the range synchronizer potentiometer voltages and look for related sensor fault codes (e.g., 2415, 2416, 2417, 2418).

   Attempt to run a transmission calibration routine and monitor the potentiometer readings to see if the synchronizer moves smoothly or hangs up.

   Clear Codes and Recalibrate

   Access the universal controller's diagnostic menu to clear the stored fault codes. Attempt a transmission calibration. If it passes, the issue may have been a temporary hydraulic hesitation.

   Service Transmission Fluid

   If the oil is degraded or the tractor has been doing short cold runs (causing condensation), drain the transmission fluid, replace the transmission filters, and refill with OEM-spec fluid.

   Inspect/Replace Solenoids and Valves

   If pressure tests indicate a valve issue, remove and inspect the transmission spool valves controlling the synchronizer. Clean or replace sticking valves.

   Mechanical Repair (Tractor Split)

   If diagnostics point to a mechanical failure of the synchronizer (e.g., metal in the oil, or failure to engage despite good hydraulic pressure and sensor readings), the tractor must be split to access the transmission internals.

   Replace Synchronizer

   Disassemble the affected transmission section and replace the damaged range shift synchronizer assembly.

   Reassembly and Final Calibration

   Reassemble the tractor, refill with fresh fluid, and perform a complete transmission calibration using the diagnostic tool to teach the TCU the new synchronizer engagement points.
