Case IH 2409 (519378.12) – Transmission Control Module (TCM), RHM (Right Hand Module), or CCM (Combine Control Module): Transmission Lockup

Issue description

Transmission is prevented from shifting gears or is mechanically/hydraulically bound. This can be caused by a failure to properly vent the transmission lockup pressure during a shift, sticking hydraulic control valves, or an electrical failure where the control module outputs spurious logic.

Applies to these machines

  • VESTRUM CVX
  • Puma series
  • Puma 150
  • Puma 240 CVT
  • Maxxum series
  • Magnum series
  • Magnum 290
  • Axial-Flow 20 Series
  • 7230
  • 8230
  • 9230

Check the cause

  1. Use a diagnostic scanner to check for fault codes, monitor the shift logic output, and verify proper communication on the CAN network to rule out a TCM failure

  2. Inspect the transmission oil color and smell, then change the filters and cut one open to inspect for metal debris or friction material

  3. Perform a system pressure test both hot and cold, and specifically under load (never disassemble the transmission before proving pressure loss or irregularities)

  4. Check the behavior of the relief valves and test the solenoids electrically to identify sticking spools or failed solenoids

  5. Inspect the driveline for mechanical drag before assuming internal transmission failure

Repair steps

  1. Replace the Transmission Control Module (TCM) and re-calibrate the transmission

Perform this step if the diagnostic scanner shows no output logic or network communication errors.

  2. Replace the faulty pressure release valve control solenoid or loop flushing valve

Perform this step if pressure tests reveal sticking valves. Locate the port block (e.g., on the ground drive motor for combines) to replace the components.

  3. Perform a complete fluid flush and replace all transmission filters

Perform this step if the oil is contaminated but pressure is stable.

  4. Teardown the transmission for a clutch pack rebuild or full transmission/pump overhaul

Perform this step if pressure testing proves internal leakage, or if there is heavy debris in the filter and bearing noise under load. Rebuild involves replacing warped friction plates.
