Case IH 241 – ENG: Vehicle Speed Signal lost

The control module has lost communication with the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS), or the circuit is providing erratic, intermittent, or incorrect data.

   Inspect the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) and its wiring harness for visible damage, chafing, or broken wires.

   Disconnect the VSS electrical connector and check for corrosion, moisture, or loose pins.

   Remove the sensor and inspect the magnetic pickup tip. Clean off any metal shavings or debris from the transmission/housing that can block the signal, then re-test.

   Use a multimeter to test the sensor's resistance and verify the voltage/signal output to the ECM. Check for continuity between the sensor harness and the ECM pins.

   Look for related codes like 242 (Vehicle Speed Signal intermittent / tampering), which usually points to a loose connection or damaged wire rather than a completely failed sensor.

   Locate the Sensor

   Locate the Vehicle Speed Sensor. Depending on the tractor model, it is typically mounted on the transmission housing, transaxle output shaft, or wheel hub area.

   Disconnect Battery

   Disconnect the machine's battery to prevent electrical shorts during repair.

   Disconnect Harness

   Unplug the electrical connector from the faulty speed sensor.

   Clean the Area

   Thoroughly clean the area around the sensor base to prevent dirt or debris from falling into the transmission housing when the sensor is removed.

   Remove Sensor

   Remove the retaining bolt(s) and carefully pull the sensor out of the housing.

   Install New Sensor

   Lubricate the O-ring on the new Vehicle Speed Sensor with clean transmission/hydraulic oil. Insert the new sensor into the port and tighten the retaining bolt to the OEM torque specification.

   Reconnect

   Reconnect the electrical harness, ensuring the weather-pack seal clicks securely into place.

   Clear Codes

   Reconnect the battery. Use a diagnostic tool (such as the Case IH Electronic Service Tool or Jaltest) to clear fault code 241 from the ECM.

   Test Drive

   Perform a test drive through multiple driving cycles to verify that the speedometer registers correctly and the fault code does not return.
