Case IH 2410 – Transmission Control Unit (TCU): Synchroniser did not disengage during a shuttle shift

Issue description

The transmission controller commanded a shuttle shift (forward-to-reverse or reverse-to-forward), but the position sensor (potentiometer) monitoring the synchronizer indicated that the synchronizer mechanically failed to uncouple from its current gear range. This condition typically disables the transmission to prevent catastrophic gear damage.

Check the cause

  1. Check for associated fault codes (e.g., 2403, 2405, 2412, 2415, 2416) which indicate an electrical fault with the sensor rather than a mechanical failure.

  2. Connect the Electronic Service Tool (EST) or enter the tractor's onboard 'H Menu' diagnostic mode (using diagnostic tool 380000843 or the dash menu). Navigate to the 'Hd' menu to verify if the processor is detecting any movement from the synchronizer potentiometer when a shift is commanded.

  3. If no movement is verified but the sensor is electrically sound, perform a hydraulic pressure test at the transmission side cover test port to check the synchronizer operating piston pressure (should read 15-18 bar). Low pressure indicates a faulty solenoid, valve body leak, or failing transmission pump.

  4. Inspect the wiring harness leading to the mid-range/reverse synchronizer potentiometer for shorts or chafing (a known issue on CX/JX models is wires rubbing and shorting out).

Repair steps

  1. Drain Fluids

    Drain the transmission/hydraulic oil into a suitable container. To prevent excessive spillage, loosen the intake filter to allow oil to drain into the sump before removal.

  2. Access the Synchronizer

    Depending on the model, remove the transmission side cover. For compact/utility models (like the JX series), the tractor may need to be split at the transmission housing to access the forward/reverse mechanical shuttle.

  3. Inspect the Assembly

    Inspect the synchronizer operating piston, shift forks, and the synchronizer rings. Look for demolished gear teeth, burnt friction material, or a bent shift fork.

  4. Replace Components

    Replace the damaged synchronizer assembly, shift fork, or faulty rotary position potentiometer as dictated by the diagnostic checks.

  5. Reassembly

    Reinstall the transmission cover or re-mate the tractor halves. Reinstall the charge and intake filters and refill the transmission with OEM-spec hydraulic fluid.

  6. Recalibration

    You must recalibrate the transmission shuttle shift using the EST or the tractor's H-Menu so the TCU can learn the new engaged/disengaged potentiometer voltage limits. Clear the fault codes from the EEPROM memory.
