Case IH 2413 – TCU: Synchroniser Disengaged Without Driver Initiation

Issue description

The transmission's range shift synchronizer uncoupled or mechanically jumped out of gear without the operator commanding a range change or shuttle shift.

Applies to these machines

  • Optum
  • Puma 165
  • Puma 180
  • Puma 195
  • Puma 210
  • Puma 225
  • Steiger
  • MXM
  • Magnum
  • Farmall
  • JX

Check the cause

  1. Cycle the shuttle lever to check if the error clears from the display.

  2. Drive the tractor and attempt to reproduce the fault to determine if the synchronizer is jumping out due to partial engagement.

  3. Using the diagnostic menu (e.g., Mode H9, Channel 0), check the potentiometer and linkage operation for physical binding, looseness, or misalignment.

  4. Disconnect the connector at the synchronizer potentiometer and measure resistance between pin A and pin C (should be 3400-4600 ohms). Actuate the linkage to ensure resistance changes smoothly without dropouts.

Repair steps

  1. Inspect external linkage

Check the external synchronizer potentiometer and its mechanical linkage. Adjust the linkage if it is out of specification.

  2. Replace potentiometer

If the potentiometer fails the resistance sweep test, replace it, adjust it to the correct physical position, and perform a transmission calibration.

  3. Perform internal transmission inspection

If the potentiometer and linkage are operating correctly and the error reoccurs, the issue is a mechanical synchronizer fault.

  4. Access the synchronizer

Split the tractor or access the transmission housing to reach the synchronizer assembly.

  5. Inspect and repair synchronizer components

Inspect the synchronizer rings, hubs, and shift forks for excessive wear, broken teeth, or damage that would cause the gear to physically jump out of engagement.

  6. Reassemble and calibrate

Repair or replace the synchronizer assembly as required, reassemble the transmission, refill the hydraulic/transmission fluid, and run a full TCU calibration.
