Case IH 2414 – Transmission Control Unit (TCU): Disable range selected by operator

Issue description

This is an operational/symptom code indicating that the operator has attempted to shift into a transmission range that the electronic management system has actively disabled. The transmission controller locks out a specific range to protect the driveline when it detects an underlying electrical, hydraulic, or mechanical fault in that range's synchronizer, potentiometer, or clutch solenoid.

Applies to these machines

  • Optum
  • Puma series
  • Magnum series
  • Maxxum series
  • Maxxum 5120
  • Maxxum 5130
  • Maxxum 5140
  • Maxxum 5150

Check the cause

  1. Check for root-cause fault codes between 2400–2413 or 2415–2420 that triggered the lockout

  2. Test the range switch for proper electrical continuity in all positions

  3. Inspect the wiring harness between the transmission controller and the synchronizer potentiometers/solenoids for open circuits or shorts to ground

  4. Check transmission oil temperature (must be between 60°C and 105°C) before attempting recalibration

Repair steps

  1. Address the Primary Failure

Based on the accompanying fault codes found in your diagnostic check, replace the failed component (most commonly a faulty range switch, a damaged synchronizer potentiometer, or a bad clutch solenoid) or repair the damaged wiring harness.

  2. Access the Diagnostic Menu

Connect the special diagnostic tool (tool 380000843) to the diagnostic connector and turn the key switch ON to access the dot matrix 'H-Menu'.

  3. Clear the Fault Codes

Navigate to the HC menu to erase all stored error codes without erasing your transmission's calibration information. Note: If you replaced a major synchronizer component, you may need to use the H8 menu, which clears stored error codes and resets all EEPROM calibration values back to default.

  4. Recalibrate the Transmission

If you replaced a potentiometer or performed an H8 reset, you must perform a full clutch and synchronizer calibration. Park the tractor away from obstacles, firmly apply the parking brake, block the wheels, and ensure the ground speed display is zero before initiating the electronic management system's calibration procedure.

  5. Test Operation

Shift through all ranges to ensure the controller no longer disables the range and code 2414 does not return.
