Case IH 2418 – CCU: Dump clutch switch short to ground
Issue description
This fault code indicates that the electrical circuit for the dump clutch switch has shorted to ground. A short to ground means the control unit is receiving a continuous, unintended grounded signal, which can prevent the transmission from operating correctly or cause erratic clutch behavior.
Applies to these machines
10 machines- Farmall
- Puma
- Maxxum
- Maxxum 110
- Maxxum 115
- Steiger
- Magnum
- 580N
- 580 Super N
- 695SV
Check the cause
Inspect the dump clutch switch physically to see if the button is stuck in the depressed position due to dirt, debris, or mechanical failure.
Perform a switch isolation test by disconnecting the electrical connector at the dump clutch switch. If the code changes from a 'short to ground' to an 'open circuit' code, the switch itself is internally shorted and must be replaced.
Perform a harness continuity test using a multimeter to test the wiring harness between the switch connector and the CCU. Look for rubbed or chafed wires touching the chassis/ground.
Inspect the pins at the switch connector and the CCU connector for moisture, corrosion, or bent pins that could be bridging the circuit to a ground pin.
Repair steps
Power Down
Turn off the ignition and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical damage during the repair.
Access the Switch
Remove the protective rubber boot, trim panels, or joystick handle casing surrounding the gear selector or loader control lever to expose the switch wiring.
Disconnect Wiring
Carefully unplug the electrical connector leading to the dump clutch switch.
Remove the Component
Depending on the specific machine model, unthread or unclip the switch/lever from its mounting point.
Install the New Part
Mount the replacement switch or lever assembly into position.
Reconnect
Plug the electrical connector back in, ensuring the locking tab clicks into place. Reinstall all trim panels and rubber boots.
Test
Reconnect the battery. Turn the ignition on, clear the stored CCU fault codes, and cycle the dump clutch switch. Verify that the transmission disengages properly and that fault code 2418 does not return.
Parts you might need
(2)Dump Clutch Switch / Dump Clutch Button
The exact part number varies heavily depending on the machine. On many modern Case IH machines, the switch cannot be purchased separately and requires replacing the upper lever/joystick assembly.
LEVER ASSY, HI-LO-DUMP CLUTCH
48023883Listed as LEVER ASSY, HI-LO-DUMP CLUTCH for models where the switch is integrated into the shift lever.
