Case IH 2419 – Transmission Control Module (TCM): Medium / reverse range synchronizer potentiometer voltage is out of calibrated range.

The transmission controller is receiving a voltage signal from the synchronizer potentiometer that falls outside the expected, calibrated parameters for the medium or reverse gear positions. This prevents the controller from verifying the physical position of the synchronizer, resulting in the tractor refusing to shift into medium or reverse ranges and often dropping into Neutral.

   Clear the error code and test the system under normal conditions to rule out a transient voltage spike

   Look for other active codes (such as F40, F44, U86, or U88) which can indicate a jammed synchronizer, swapped connector, or neutral error

   Inspect the medium/reverse range synchronizer potentiometer connector (X-667) and the TCM connector (X-094) to ensure they are fully seated, undamaged, and free of corrosion

   Disconnect the potentiometer connector, turn the ignition switch ON, and measure the voltage at the harness to verify the controller is sending the correct 5V reference signal

   Measure the resistance of the potentiometer while operating it to check for dead spots, short circuits, or an open circuit

   Verify there are no mechanical faults within the transmission, such as a physically jammed synchronizer preventing the potentiometer from reaching its calibrated range

   Park machine safely

   Ensure the tractor is parked safely on level ground with the engine off and the key removed.

   Locate potentiometer

   Locate the medium/reverse range synchronizer potentiometer on the transmission housing (typically on the right-hand side of the transmission case).

   Disconnect harness

   Disconnect the electrical harness connector from the potentiometer.

   Remove faulty potentiometer

   Unbolt and carefully remove the faulty potentiometer from the transmission housing.

   Install new potentiometer

   Install the new potentiometer and secure it with the mounting hardware.

   Reconnect harness

   Reconnect the electrical harness, ensuring the weather seal is intact.

   Calibrate synchronizer

   Perform a transmission synchronizer calibration procedure. The new potentiometer must be electronically mated to the transmission's physical synchronizer positions using the tractor's onboard H-menu calibration mode or via the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST).

   Clear codes and test drive

   Clear any stored fault codes and test drive the tractor, shifting through all ranges to verify that medium and reverse engage properly.
