Case IH 2432 – CCU: Voltage from gear 3-4 neutral switch too high

Issue description

The control module is receiving a voltage signal from the gear 3-4 neutral switch circuit that exceeds the maximum expected threshold. This typically points to an open circuit, a short to a power source, or an internally failed switch.

Applies to these machines

  • Farmall
  • Maxxum
  • Puma

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness and the electrical connector at the gear 3-4 neutral switch on the transmission housing for rubbed-through insulation, broken wires, or corrosion inside the connector pins.

  2. Disconnect the switch and use a multimeter to measure the voltage on the signal wire coming from the CCU. If it reads system voltage when it shouldn't, check the harness for a short to power.

  3. Test the switch itself with a multimeter by checking the resistance across the switch terminals while manually shifting the tractor in and out of the 3-4 gear range. If the switch reads open in all states, it has failed internally.

  4. Ensure the switch's ground circuit is clean and securely fastened to the chassis.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical shorts during repair.

  2. Locate the Switch

Locate the gear 3-4 neutral switch on the side or top of the transmission housing.

  3. Disconnect

Unplug the electrical wiring harness connector from the switch.

  4. Remove the Switch

Using an appropriately sized wrench or deep socket, unthread the faulty neutral switch from the transmission housing. Have a catch pan ready, as a small amount of transmission fluid may weep from the port.

  5. Install the New Switch

Thread the new OEM replacement switch into the housing. Ensure any required O-rings or crush washers are in place to prevent fluid leaks. Tighten to the torque specification outlined in your specific model's service manual.

  6. Reconnect

Plug the electrical connector back into the switch, ensuring the locking tab clicks into place.

  7. Clear Codes

Reconnect the battery. Turn the key to the ON position and use a diagnostic scan tool (or the tractor's AFS Pro display) to clear the stored CCU 2432 fault code.

  8. Test Operation

Start the tractor and cycle the transmission through the gears, specifically the 3-4 range, to verify the code does not return and the transmission shifts correctly.
