Case IH 2433 – CCU (Chassis Control Unit): Voltage from gear 3-4 neutral switch too low

Issue description

This code indicates that the signal voltage returning from the gear 3-4 neutral switch is below the minimum expected threshold. This condition typically points to a short to ground in the wiring harness, a disconnected or broken wire, or an internally failed neutral switch that is no longer closing the circuit properly.

Applies to these machines

  • Farmall
  • Magnum
  • Steiger
  • Puma
  • Maxxum
  • Axial-Flow

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness running from the CCU to the gear 3-4 neutral switch on the transmission housing for chafed wires, pinched harnesses, or exposed copper that could cause a short to ground.

  2. Disconnect the switch and inspect the electrical connector for moisture, corrosion, or bent pins.

  3. Turn the key to the ON position (engine off) and probe the supply wire at the switch connector to ensure the CCU is sending the correct reference voltage.

  4. Test the switch itself with a multimeter for proper continuity when the transmission is shifted in and out of the 3-4 gear range. If the switch reads open when it should be closed, it has failed.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

Turn off the ignition, remove the key, and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Locate the Switch

Locate the gear 3-4 neutral switch on the side of the transmission housing.

  3. Disconnect

Unplug the electrical connector from the switch.

  4. Remove the Switch

Using an appropriately sized wrench or deep socket, unscrew the faulty switch from the transmission housing. Note: Have a catch pan ready, as a small amount of transmission fluid may weep from the port depending on the switch location.

  5. Install the New Switch

Thread the new neutral switch into the housing by hand to prevent cross-threading, then tighten to the OEM torque specification.

  6. Reconnect

Plug the electrical connector back into the switch, ensuring the locking tab clicks into place.

  7. Test

Reconnect the battery, turn the key on, and clear the inactive fault codes from the CCU display. Shift through the gears to verify that code 2433 does not return.
