Case IH 245 – Engine Controller (ENG / ECM): Fan Clutch Voltage too low
Issue description
This code indicates that the engine controller has detected a voltage drop below the normal operating threshold on the fan clutch control circuit. This is typically caused by an open circuit, a short to ground in the wiring harness, moisture/corrosion in the connector, or an internal failure of the electronic viscous fan clutch solenoid.

Check the cause
Visual Inspection: Check the fan clutch assembly for physical damage. Look for fluid/oil leaks around the bearing seal on the backside of the clutch, which indicates a blown viscous fluid seal.
Harness and Connector Check: Inspect the engine harness and the fan clutch connector. Look for moisture in the connector, pushed back or expanded pins, broken connector shells, or wire insulation damage.
Voltage and Resistance Test: Turn the keyswitch OFF and disconnect the fan clutch harness. Turn the keyswitch ON and check the supply voltage from the ECM at the harness connector. Test the resistance (ohms) across the fan clutch solenoid pins to check for an internal short or open coil.
Mechanical Resistance Test: With the engine off and cooled down, attempt to spin the fan blades by hand. There should be some resistance. If it free-spins excessively or has side-to-side wobble, the clutch or water pump bearing has failed.
Bypass/Default Test: Unplug the fan harness completely. On most Case IH systems, unplugging the fan harness defaults the fan to run at full speed. If it does not engage at full speed when unplugged, the clutch itself is mechanically faulty.
Repair steps
Preparation
Turn the keyswitch OFF and allow the engine to cool completely.
Disconnect Electrical
Unplug the electrical harness connector from the fan clutch.
Loosen the Clutch Nut
Leave the serpentine belt on initially; the belt tension will help hold the water pump pulley in place. Use a fan clutch wrench to loosen the main nut securing the clutch to the shaft.
Remove Assembly
Release the tension on the serpentine belt, finish unthreading the nut, and carefully lift the fan clutch and fan blade assembly out of the engine bay.
Swap Fan Blades
Unbolt the fan blades from the old clutch housing and bolt them onto the new fan clutch assembly.
Install New Clutch
Thread the new fan clutch assembly onto the water pump shaft. Torque the nut to OEM specifications.
Reassembly
Reinstall the serpentine belt and reconnect the fan clutch electrical harness.
Clear Codes
Connect an electronic service tool to clear the ENG 245 fault code, start the engine, and verify proper fan engagement.
