2461 - UCM

Case IH 2461 - UCM – UCM: Shuttle lever R1 switch voltage too low.

Issue description

The control module is detecting that the voltage signal from the R1 (Reverse 1) switch inside the Forward/Neutral/Reverse (FNR) shuttle lever assembly has dropped below the acceptable threshold.

Applies to these machines

  • VESTRUM CVX
  • Maxxum Series 110
  • Maxxum Series 115
  • Maxxum Series 120
  • Maxxum Series 125
  • Maxxum Series 130
  • Maxxum Series 140
  • Magnum Series 180-340
  • Steiger Series 350-600
  • JX Series
  • JXC Series JXC75-JXC110
  • JXU Series JX70U-JX1100U
  • Puma Series
  • Optum Series

Check the cause

  1. Cycle the Lever: Rapidly cycle the shuttle lever from forward to reverse and back to neutral several times to free up potentially sticking internal switches.

  2. Harness Inspection: Remove the steering column cowling and inspect the wiring harness exiting the shuttle lever for chafed wires or pinched harnesses.

  3. Voltage Test: Disconnect the shuttle lever multi-pin connector. Using a multimeter, verify that the UCM is supplying the correct reference voltage (typically 5V) and a good ground. Test the R1 signal wire for continuity to the UCM and ensure it is not shorted to ground.

  4. On-Board Diagnostics (H-Menu): Enter the diagnostic H-Menu (e.g., H7 mode for cab inputs) and monitor live switch states to see if the UCM registers the switch changing from open to closed when moved into reverse.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Turn off the ignition and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical spikes to the UCM.

  2. Remove Cowling

Remove the plastic covers/cowling surrounding the steering column to expose the base of the shuttle lever.

  3. Disconnect Wiring

Unplug the multi-pin electrical connector from the base of the shuttle lever.

  4. Remove the Lever

Remove the mounting screws or bolts securing the shuttle lever bracket to the steering column assembly and slide the old unit out.

  5. Install New Lever

Position the new shuttle lever assembly into place and secure it with the mounting hardware.

  6. Reconnect

Plug the electrical harness back in, ensuring the locking tab clicks into place.

  7. Reassemble & Test

Reinstall the steering column cowling. Reconnect the battery, turn the key ON, and clear the stored fault codes. Test the tractor's forward and reverse engagement to verify the repair.
