Issue description

SPN 513 designates "Actual Engine Percent Torque". FMI 19 stands for "Received Network Data In Error". This means there is a Controller Area Network (CAN) communication failure. The receiving module is either getting erratic data, or no data at all, regarding the engine's current torque output from the Engine ECU over the CAN 1 data link.

Check the cause

  1. Verify that the Engine ECU is fully powered by checking for blown fuses, tripped circuit breakers, or poor ground connections

  2. Inspect Engine ECU and DEC connectors for pushed-out pins, moisture, or corrosion in the CAN 1 connectors

  3. Check for J1939 wiring problems between the J1939 Backbone and the devices, looking for chafed wires or pinch points along the CAN 1 bus routing

  4. Verify that the vehicle's parameters are programmed to the correct J1939 device options to rule out a software mismatch

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

    Turn off the machine and disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Isolate the CAN 1 Bus

    Locate the diagnostic port or the CAN 1 backbone connecting the Engine ECU and the DEC.

  3. Test Terminating Resistors

    Using a multimeter, measure the resistance across the CAN High and CAN Low pins. A healthy CAN bus should read approximately 60 ohms. If it reads 120 ohms, one terminating resistor is faulty or there is an open circuit. If it reads near 0 ohms, there is a short circuit.

  4. Repair Wiring/Connectors

    Based on the visual inspection and multimeter tests, repair any broken wires in the CAN 1 harness. Clean corroded connector terminals with electrical contact cleaner and replace any damaged pins.

  5. Check Fuses

    Replace any blown fuses providing wake-up power to the Engine ECU.

  6. Reassemble and Clear Codes

    Reconnect the battery, turn the key to the ON position, and use a diagnostic scan tool (like the Case IH EST) to clear the inactive fault codes.

  7. Test Run

    Start the engine and monitor the "Actual Engine Percent Torque" parameter on the live data stream to ensure the DEC is now receiving the signal.
