Case IH 2478 (92.10) - DEC – Transmission Control Unit (TCU) or Vehicle/Equipment Control Module: CAN 1 - EEC2 Absent on CAN1

Issue description

The EEC2 (Electronic Engine Controller 2) message was not received on the CAN 1 network when expected. This message contains critical operational data, most notably the accelerator pedal position and percent engine load. When absent, the receiving controller flags a fault and typically forces the machine into a default state such as forcing the engine to idle or limiting vehicle speed.

Check the cause

  1. Check CAN-Bus Wiring: Inspect the CAN wire and cables connecting the Engine Controller (EEC/ECU) to the Transmission Control Unit (TCU/APC200) for breaks or disconnections.

  2. Check for Shorts: Inspect the CAN wiring and connectors to see if they are defective, shorted to vehicle ground, or shorted to battery voltage.

  3. Check for Interference: Look for sources of electromagnetic interference on the CAN-Bus network.

  4. Verify Accelerator Pedal: Check the accelerator pedal position sensor and its wiring.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

    Turn off the machine and disconnect battery power before probing sensitive CAN modules.

  2. Inspect Connectors

    Access the main CAN 1 harness connecting the Engine ECU and the Transmission TCU. Inspect the connectors at both modules for physical damage, moisture, corrosion, or pushed-out pins.

  3. Test Harness Continuity

    Perform a continuity test on the CAN High and CAN Low wires between the engine and transmission. Repair or replace any broken wires or connectors that are shorting to ground or battery voltage.

  4. Test the Pedal Circuit

    If the wiring is intact, check the accelerator pedal position sensor circuit. Repair any faults between the pedal and the Engine ECU.

  5. Module Verification

    Reconnect all modules, clear the fault codes, and verify if the TCU successfully receives the EEC2 message from the engine controller. If the wiring is perfect but the engine controller is proven defective and unable to send the message, the Engine ECU may require a software reflash or replacement.
